Creating a Forum
-
Hi, I’m an officer in my local ASME chapter and recently we’ve been communicating via email, but that doesn’t work very efficiently.
Basically we’re looking to be able to set up a forum that we can post a new topic in and then everyone can add to it via threads.
Is it possible to do something like this on wordpress?
Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no forum or wiki that you can embed into a free hosted WordPress.com blog as there is no FTP access and we cannot install plugins. You have three options: WordPress.com Forum Options

Id be very grateful if someone could explain this which is from the link above.
“Register a forum on the internet and then create a custom menu in your blog and include a custom link to the forum in it.”
I do have a custom menu and links, but I don’t understand why and how we need to create this to link to a forum and not just have an ordinary link listed with the other links? Would it be to list subjects?

It would be brilliant if someone could post a link to a blog that has one of these.
Thanks!

I don’t know any blog that has one, but it’s easy. Really, if you find hosting for a forum somewhere, anywhere, you can link to it in a Custom Menu. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

Thanks.
I just don’t get what is the difference between just having a link to a forum and using the custom menu?
Why can’t we just have a link, or in other words what is the benefit/purpose of using the custom menu?
Thanks!

The custom menu has a link right on the top navigation bar when visitors click it they are in your forum. It’s smooth and unified appearance.
I also explained how to do it here http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/04/23/wordpress-com-forum-options/ and included the link to a custom menu walkthrough in it http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/08/11/wordpress-com-custom-menu-walk-through/
