I am trying to create a new website using a existing domain name but step 3 of 3 on the intial WP setup will not allow me to select the domain name because it has been taken. Of course it has been taken by me. What can I do? WP will not allow me to move forward

    Hey monacoautocollection,

At WordPress.com, if you wish to use your custom domain, you need one of the paid plans, free plan doesn’t allow you to do so.

You can either transfer or map your domain name.

    Hey Monacoautocollection,

I think that you’re domain is bought under another registrar aside from WordPress.

There’s 2 way to do this:

    1) Domain transfer (Free)
So what you can is go to your domain registrar account and unlock the domain for transfer.

If you don’t know how to do it, just search [registrar name eg; Godaddy] unlock domain transfer and follow the tutorials that you find step by step.

After you’ve done that, just go to your WordPress admin and go to Domain > Add Domain and then select the “Already own a domain?” option.

Then select the Transfer to WordPress.com option and you will see an option to type in the domain name that you owned.

So just type in that domain that you owned (make sure it’s already unlocked) then just proceed to the next step until you’re done. I think the transfer process will take up to 7-14 days.

    2) Domain mapping (For a Fee)
Did you see the other option under the “Already own a domain?” option?

Simply click that and just follow it step by step. A full guide is in the link below.

    Hope this helps!
