Creating a Page Using a Template

  • Unknown's avatar

I used wordpress years ago and found it simple and intuitive, but returning to it after 5 years ago it has become an unweildy, obtuse mess, to the point where I don’t seem to be able to carry out the simplest of functions with it.

For example, I chose the blank theme for my site, which contains three templates by default – “index”, “page” and “single”. I can modify these templates, however, I cannot find a way to use them when creating a new page (or editing an existing one). When you go to add a new page I am directed to a menu to choose a new theme (not template).

    Am I missing something here?

  • Hey there,

Thanks for reaching out and happy to help you with this.

For example, I chose the blank theme for my site, which contains three templates by default – “index”, “page” and “single”. I can modify these templates, however, I cannot find a way to use them when creating a new page (or editing an existing one). When you go to add a new page I am directed to a menu to choose a new theme (not template).

Ok so to help add some context…

Index – this is the posts page template and this is applied when a posts page is set via Appearance > Customize Homepage settings.

Page – this is the template of a default page.

Single – this is the template of a default post.

When creating templates and applying them, this can be done in the page options on the right, as seen here: https://wordpress.com/support/templates/edit-the-page-template/

What’s your site going to be all about? If we have some more information – we can probably look to save you some time. :)

Thanks for replying – yes I am aware of the above, but the problem is my page template has a black background, but when I create a new page it has a white background. It doesn’t seem to honour what has been set.

The template setting in the page options on the right only ever says “default template” – how can I change this to a different template?

My site is a basic band website – I want to have a home page and some static pages for bio, contacts, lyrics etc and then blog posts for gigs or upcoming releases etc etc. Theme wise I prefer a dark background and for most pages to be centred around one or more images with accompanying text.

    see http://www.thefrockens.com

Specific answers I am looking for right now are as follows:

    • How can I make the background black for all pages and posts?
    • How can I change the font and font size of headings in pages and posts? When I click into the heading the block setting dialog says “no block selected”
    • How does the home (index) page setup work? With pages you can just click into them and edit the content, but with the home page that option isn’t available – can I only edit it via the index template? If I try to create a new page to set as the home page I don’t get the option to use the index template.

    Cheers,

    Ben

  • Hi Ben –

There’s 2 ways to achieve the desired black background.

The first option would be to utilize a theme that offers this as a default setting. Those options can be found in the theme showcase. I’ve added some filters to give you a list of those options:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/custom-background+business/thefrockens.wordpress.com/

The second option is to use the premium hosting plan which includes the ability to customize your backgrounds, fonts, and colors through the styles tool. https://thefrockens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/site-editor.php?path=%2Fwp_global_styles

The premium plan also includes additional media storage and 4k video storage, access to all of the premium themes, ability to utilize CSS customization on the site, and live chat support. See here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
