  Is there a way to get the domain name i want, which is clearly available, without a paid subscription? It seems the only way to get a domain name anywhere near what I actually want is to pay a subscription fee. Is this intentional or is there some way around it?

  The only free domains here end with .something.blog or .wordpress.com. Custom domains need to be purchased (along with a plan at WordPress.com) and need to be renewed annually. You’ll find that anywhere else on the Interweb custom domains aren’t free.

  I’m afraid the only way to get a domain via WordPress.com is by having a paid subscription.
