  I have a .com.au domain that I own – how can I use WordPress free platform to build the site.

  You can no longer register or map a domain individually with WordPress.com. Domain subscriptions can be purchased as a part of one of our many plans here. The domains with plans only update were made as we continue to work diligently to provide the best WordPress.com experience for both users who choose to purchase a plan as well as those who choose the free plan.
