Let’s say you have http://www.example.com registered elsewhere and you pointed to your your-user-name.wordpress.com site. When you want to move your domain, you may contact your domain registrar to have http://www.example.com point to another name server. Then the original site hosted on WordPress.com that had the domain http://www.example.com will have its original site address as your-user-name.wordpress.com.
