creating a website

  I was thinking of creating a website with wordpress as I am not happy with our current web designer/host and I kind of want to have more control in the creating and managing pocess of the website. So I was thinking of using wordpress, but I wanted to test it out and see what I could create and if it would look good. But it looks like before I can do anything I have to pay for the services up front. It asks for my credit card information. I was hoping to be able to create something and if I am happy with the way it turns out then I pay for it when I publish. I dont necessarily want to pay for a premium service when I dont know if it is going to give me the ability to create what I want. Am I correct about this or are thye just asking for credit card information up front but wont charge me until I actually publish it? Please advise. Also is all communication done through email or can I be advised by a live person?

  You can use WordPress.com totally for free! Register your free domain (that ends in .wordpress.com) here: http://wordpress.com/start/domains/

  Use a free theme, and a free subscription plan.

  Set up a test site and play around with different themes and construct your site.

  Can i use the free username while I play around and then transfer it to my current domain name?

  Yes. If you register the domain under the unwanted user name, you will have to transfer ownership of it to the user name that you want it to be associated with moving forward. It’s not difficult, here’s how: https://en.support.wordpress.com/transferring-a-site-to-another-wordpress-com-account/
