Creating a website for myself
-
Please cancel my $99 upgrade. I cannot understand your site well enough to create a website for myself. I do not blog. I just wanted to find a simple way to create a website to showcase my art. I am not trying to make a living being an artist, so the upgrade of $299 for ‘business’ seems excessive. I cannot find a simple ‘how-to’ on your website; although I thought I was signing up for it with the $99 upgrade. Thank you for your help.

23 minutes is a short time for a trial
The “how to” is here:
You can cancel the package yourself at:
Dashboard >> Store >> My Upgrades >> Mouse over the upgrade and click on the refund or what ever the button says. Since a domain name is part of the $99.– package you have 48 hours to request a full refund
Suggestion: Cancel the upgrade (takes the pressure off and gets you back to free) – then work through the tutorials a bit and put a bit of your artwork or something on your test site
If you have specific questions you can ask them in the forum here

Well I guess I did not buy an upgrade although WordPress asked for and received my credit card information. I could not accomplish your suggestions until I went back in and re-created a blog site, nor could I respond to auxclass’s above post. I have spent some time trying to learn how to set up a website, but I am not getting very far I am afraid. I fear this is just a bit over my head. Thanks for your feedback.

You do not need to purchase any upgrade to create a “website”.
- A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication.
- A website is a page based site designed to operate as a one way means of communication ie. a noticeboard.
Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based. For greater clarity read > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/07/25/create-a-wordpress-website-step-by-step/
Then see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/The only themes we can use on free hosted WordPress.com blogs are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/
On one hand, none of the characteristic “blog” features like categories, tags, authors, dates, etc. can be removed from a free hosted WordPress.com blog, without purchasing an annually renewable custom design upgrade and doing the required CSS editing.

Hi sleepdr11,
If you’d like to give WordPress.com another shot, I’d be happy to help you out. Please let me know where you’re running into difficulty.

My suggestion –
Set:
At Dashboard >> Settings >> Reading >> Site Visibility >> Discourage search engines from indexing this site – – that will keep search engines out of your site so as not to disturb any web presence you already have.
Look at the getting started stuff – specifically for Pages & Posts (they edit the same, just not the same animal)
Then make a Page or Two – put one or two graphics on each page –
Make a Post or two – maybe make the Post be an announcement for a show or about some achievement you did or will do (Posts work sort of like a news feed or news magazine)
Don’t worry to much about how the site really looks – after you look at it for a day or two you will get a better idea of what you want – and the look changes when you have a real Pages & Posts to look at
If you have trouble – @timethief has some nice info, but it can be a bit of an overload –
and you can always ask for help here
Good luck

I clearly do not know what I am doing. I try to follow the learning modules, but it does not pan out. For example, I tried to add another page (static) for a website page, called it home and added photos of my art to it. But when I go to home it is not there. I also tried to select a theme for that home page and, as you can guess, it is not there either.
Thanks for offering help; I am uncertain what to ask… -
Hi sleepdr11,
No worries, we’ll get you sorted out. :)
You actually set up your home page just right, there just wasn’t any content. To test it, I added a sentence just to make sure it was showing up (so you can see it now!).
To add images to that page, go to https://rkjonesblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=3&action=edit&message=1 and click on the Add Media button. From there, you will be able to upload any images and add them to the page.
This page will walk you through that process:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/As for your theme, you can change that by going to your Dashboard and finding the Appearance > Themes tab and selecting a new one. This page explains how to change your theme:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/And you can browse through our options here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/Note that some themes need special settings to look like the demos, so if you need help, just let us know.
