Creating drop-down menus in "Custom menus"

    I’m currently now exploring WordPress and stuff, and I just have a question – when I’m on my blog in the dashboard and I select “Appearence” -> “Menus” to build my own custom menu. However I have not quite figured out yet how to have “drop-down”-menus when using this.

    For instance – when I haven’t selected any menu to be my primary menu, then the pages show up on the menu. Now the drop-downs works fine since I’m using some pages as a “parent”, but when I select a custom made menu it doesn’t work to use any parents in it.
    Does anyone understand? Quite hard to describe, but I hope you will get the point.
