Creating dropdown menu for Pages
-
I will have several subpages under an Assignments Page. Anyway to make that into a dropdown menu like “Categories” is?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Is the site you are talking about the one linked to your username, http://pec2012.wordpress.com/ ? If so since it is private we volunteers cannot see it so we are a little in the dark. At the very least we would have to know which theme you are using, and what would be better would be if you could just temporarily make it public so that we could look at it.

As far as I’m aware, you can’t put a widget in the sidebar that gives a drop-down menu for pages the way you can with the categories widget (a pity for those of us who have many pages). However, I’ve used a custom menu and have pages and subpages drop-down and nesting in the custom menu (in the header tabs). That would, I think, work well for assignments, as well. You could have a tab labeled “Assignments” that would link to the main Assignment page, and then the subpages would drop down from that.

Here’s the link for custom menus: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
You can also put a custom menu in a sidebar using a widget, if you prefer that.

I think that all wp.com themes support at least one custom menu, but it’s possible that you’re using a theme that doesn’t support custom menus — but unlikely. It’s hard to say what solution would work best for you, as thesacredpath says, without being able to see the site. Still, hope this helped a wee bit.

Sorry for having the site private … forgot to make that change. It is now public. The theme I am using does support one custom menu but I can’t figure out how to make the “Pages” widget a dropdown like the “Categories” widget does automatically.
I’m a newbie trying to set this up for a class this fall. I appreciate the help!

The pages widget does not have a dropdown option, and neither does the custom menu widget. Both will show the pages and subpages as hierarchical, but not as dropdowns.
You can do dropdowns on the top navigation. You create a custom menu, move all the pages you want into the custom menu, arrange them as you desire and on the subpage items, you drag them slightly to the right underneath their parent page. When you have them all arranged as you wish, then you save the menu. Next you go to the “theme location” module and from the primary location pulldown select your custom menu and then click save in that module.
View your blog and you will see the menu items at the top of the screen with the dropdowns.
