Creating functions for site members to post events and create discussion groups
-
Is it possible to create a page that allows certain site members to post events onto a calendar for other users to see? Also, is it possible to create a page where the same certain site members can create discussion groups for others to join?

Hi there,
You have many different users roles that you can invite people to join:
- Administrator: The highest level of permission. Admins have the power to access almost everything.
- Editor: Has access to all posts, pages, comments, categories, tags, and can upload to Media.
- Author: Can write, upload Media, edit, and publish their own posts.
- Contributor: Has no publishing or uploading capability, but can write and edit their own posts until they are published.
- Follower (public sites) / Viewer (private sites only): Can read and comment on posts and pages.
- Subscriber (plugin-enabled sites): Similar to the Follower / Viewer role; can read and comment on posts and pages.
I think and editor role might be suitable for the ones editing the calendar and the discussions, where also followers or subscribers might comment on these.

Hope this helps,

Thank you. Regarding the calendar page, I will be able to allow site members to write and post their own events to be seen on the calendar? Also, will I be able to put a registration button for others to register for the events?

How the calendar functions across multiple roles on your site is going to depend on how you set it up. For example, if y’all are using a shared google calendar vs a plugin option. Can you share more details with me about the purpose and function of the calendar. That’s going to help me get clued in on the best option for you and the project.
Yes, you can create a button with a link to register for events. Are you planning to collect those registrations through your site or a third party?

It does not matter to me whether the registrations are collected via the site or a third party, all that matters is that the person who posts the event is able to see who has registered for their event. The whole purpose of the calendar is for presidents of student organizations to post upcoming events for their club, and other students can see these events and register for them.

Hello there,
Many thanks for that additional information.
For registrations via a third party, you may wish to check out Eventbrite, as WordPress.com has an block whereby you can embed event into a page or post: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/eventbrite-block/
Taking registrations natively via the site would require a plugin of some sort, using plugins as seen here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/events%20calendar/
In order to use plugins on a site, the business plan would need to be in use on the site: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
Would you be willing to tell me more about what features are required for the site? I could perhaps offer more information on how to achieve those all important site goals.
