how do i create a gallery from mt media library. i can’t figure out how to choose the pics i want to use.

Galleries are tied to posts. In other words, if you start a post and upload images while that post is active in the editor, then those images are in the gallery for that post.

There is no way at this time to pull previously uploaded images out of the main library and put them into a gallery for a post. I’m hoping we will see this feature at sometime in the not too distant future, but for right now we cannot do it.

You can insert the previously uploaded images as thumbnails from the media library and sort of make your own gallery.

actually, while on the subject. can individual pics be deleted from the gallery?

You can delete the gallery from the post and then put in another gallery choosing only the images you wish to include.

Here is an excellent article about using the gallery feature:

Re the first question: If the already uploaded images you want are attached to the same past post, you CAN create a gallery. You get the ID number of that post and use it this way (if you want the thumbnails to link to the full-size originals):

    [gallery link="file" id="ID_HERE"]

Or this way (if you want them to link to the so-called attachment pages:

    [gallery id="ID_HERE"]

Re the second question: You CAN delete an individual image from a gallery, if you don’t mind its getting deleted from the media library as well.

Am I to understand from the answers to this query, that if I have all the pictures in media library that i want to use in a post, but they have been used in other posts, I have to reload them from my computer….

Only if you want to use the special feature that WP calls “gallery”. For independent images, no: you simply click the “Add an Image” button and then click “Media Library” instead of “Select files”.

Thanks, Sorry I wasn’t clear, I did mean for a gallery. Well isn’t that an odd thing to have to do!?

I’d say so… The gallery feature was conceived as a means for batch uploading and managing images, and to me it was rather poorly conceived. We had the problem of that phantom thing called “attachment page”: the paradox that visitors can leave comments while you cannot control the page at all. Or we had the problem that none of the supposed codes for image order would work, and even staff didn’t ever come up with an answer to that. Or that in some themes you don’t get next/previous navigation tabs, so you have to go back to the post and click on another thumbnail. We have all those complications if you want to have two galleries in the same post, or a gallery plus an independent image – or the shortcomings danb377 brought up. There’s also the outrageous bug that a gallery post will affect another gallery post if they appear in the same blog page (the newer one will adopt the number of images per row of the older one, no matter how you set it to be)!

With 2.7 there were some minor improvements: you now have a choice over attachment page or link to full-size original alone, and you can set thumbnail size and number of images per row with buttons when you insert the gallery, instead of having to add code afterwards. But the rest of the problems weren’t addressed (we’ve got some staff promises re 2.8).
