Creating NEW blog post in Classic Editor

  • Unknown's avatar

I have found partial instructions for accessing the classic editor (https://wordpress.com/support/classic-editor-guide/). That editor has features lost in subsequent editors, so I use only the classic. The Guide is clear on how to access the classic editor to EDIT an EXISTING page (also works for posts), but it does not describe how to access the editor to CREATE a NEW post. How do you do that? I brute-forced it by creating a post using the block editor and then using the Guide’s instructions to hover over to access the classic, but it kept saying ‘you started this in the block editor!!’ Besides, that’s a horribly clunky method.

  • Hi there,

You have tried the option show here in this screenshot? https://d.pr/i/JQoP5y

I have found partial instructions for accessing the classic editor.
That editor has features lost in subsequent editors, so I use only the classic.

If I can ask, what feature is it that you find in the classic editor but is not present in the new block editor? We will at some point in the future retire the classic editor entirely, so it would be good to see what that feature is so we can make sure to mention it to our developers.

    Thanks for the additional info!

No, I hadn’t found that pulldown – that’s what I needed – thanks! I suggest adding that information to the Guide that I linked so no one else has to bother you about it.

I couldn’t find any context-linked help function in the block editor so I don’t know whether it can’t do what I wanted or I just couldn’t figure it out. One example: I could not make the text wrap around the photo, which is a no-brainer to do in the classic editor. I embedded an inline photo, but there was a “zombie” portion of the photo on one side that prohibited the text from coming up there. I could not make it go away.

The first thing I discovered when I tried (and then refused) to convert to a previous post-classic editor was that it would bring up only 100 of your most-used tags in the tag field, rather than offering from all of them when you started typing. That made that editor pretty instantly useless to me so I gave up immediately. I checked again much later and the problem had not been solved. I didn’t stick with the block editor to see if that problem had been solved or not, b/c I couldn’t see any obvious place to enter tags and categories.

There is too much in the way in the block editor. JUST TYPE dammit – that’s what I like about the classic. Block is great for those people who want to spend a lot of time refining all kinds of details, I suppose.

What possible reason could there be to retire an editor so many people rely on?

  • Hi there,

I could not make the text wrap around the photo

You can do that in the new editor by following these steps:

    1. Insert the image

    2. Insert the text

    3. Select the image block and select the alignment option. This will automatically wrap the text you have inserted below the image.

I know that you feel that most things are missing, but they aren’t. They are either improved or changed location.

I got the image to align left, but though it was a 400 pixel image, the editor extended a space around it to the right and prevented text from moving up into that area. I’ll play around with it more and see if I can find it. I have not found the bar you show there.

The biggie, aside from not wanting a more complicated editing experience, is the tag Issue I described. Have they fixed the fact that the tag window can’t come up with all my tags, but only the 100 most used? That was the deal-killer.

  • I have not found the bar you show there.

That bar will come up only when you’ve clicked on the image — one of the nicer things about blocks is you actually get a lot more options for each block, between that bar and the block settings options on the right. Or, you can just leave the blocks as they are and keep typing.

You might have configured your editor so that the block toolbar is pinned only at the top of the page. I personally prefer that option so the bar is less “in the way” of my text, but you can also make it show up directly above the block you’re working on. Under the three vertical dots on the right, you’ll have a “Top Toolbar” option that you can tap to change. Let us know if that brings the bar up for you.

Have they fixed the fact that the tag window can’t come up with all my tags, but only the 100 most used?

    Do you mean this one?
    https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/please-make-the-new-editor-recognize-all-my-old-tags/

That was actually in an editor before this editor, but the issue there was performance problems with too many tags displaying. The new editor just shows a box where you can start typing your tag name, and it will bring up a search box with matches. If that’s awkward for your use case, can you send a few more details on what you’re doing? We might have a good workaround.

  • Regarding space below the image — is that where the caption would normally go? Do you caption your images? If you’ll send a link to an affected post/page, we can check.

    (my em)

That’s what the Classic editor does, and what I want – type in the box and it offers you ALL your matching tags. The problem with the editor that I complained about was that when I typed a tag into the box, only the alphabetically-first 100 of my tags were found (through about the “Fs”). In the thread linked, the example was that I typed in “Tosca..” and that (now ancient, but post-classic) editor offered no tags, though there were 5 or 6 tags that existed on my blog with those letters. If the block editor now actually searches and finds ALL my matching tags when I type in that space, as the classic does, I’ll be very happy.

Regarding space below the image — is that where the caption would normally go? Do you caption your images? If you’ll send a link to an affected post/page, we can check.

It’s a space beside the image. The image was left-justified, and when the image was selected, you could see the box-edge around it that extended to the right margin. I couldn’t make that extended thing go away. The image was 400 px wide*, to leave ample space for text. I did not publish any page with this problem – just went to the classic editor to fix the post – but I could go back and try to recreate the problem and screen-capture it. I will also hunt around and see if there is something I missed. I see the classic editor is promised only through 2022…

I normally do not caption images and emphatically do not want a caption space below any image unless I create a caption to put there :)

*I’m assuming the block editor has an option for “actual size” as a default – didn’t check on this yet.

Btw, I really appreciate this engagement with my questions!

  • Happy to help.

Re: tagging, honestly I don’t have any test or live sites with that many tags for testing. Would you be willing to try with the new editor on your current site? Try typing a bit more of the tag too; I can imagine they’d still have a limit on the number of results displayed, but hopefully as you type more letters and have fewer matches, the correct tags will appear.

It’s a space beside the image.

OK, so just like a margin? That’s pretty typical for classic or current editors, but perhaps you could share a link to an affected post? Also, I did some testing; if I add a caption there’s more space below the image; if I remove the caption, that extra space goes away. There are still margins between the image and text, though, like most floating images will have.

The problem was that zero appeared. The program searched only the first hundred of my tags (it’s food, so there are countless details in the tags). The person I asked about this at the time said the program had been written to ignore anything past the first 100, which is why I asked that that be fixed. I’ll make a stab at this.

Not like a margin. The image was 400x300px. The program seemed to have defined the entire column, left to right, and 300px vertically, as belonging to the image. There was a blue (I think) frame defining that area (visible only when the picture was selected). The image was up against the left edge as it was supposed to be, and extended about halfway across the column; but the frame continued to the right edge – was as wide as the column – encompassing white space of the other half of the column on the right, and so prevented the text from using that rightward space. I’ll see if I can reproduce that and post an image. Think of it as a column-wide slot with an image in it that you could slide all the way side to side :)

  • OK. If you can possibly send a link to the affected page or post, that would be helpful.

And, re: the tags, please confirm whether you’re having issues in the new editor. Thanks!

Reminder: There is no “affected page” b/c I did not post it. I gave up and went to the classic editor, which worked easily and perfectly. This thread started b/c I asked how to access the classic to generate a new post, rather than to edit an existing one (editing is covered in the classic guide, creating is not). This question was answered.

I was then asked about other issues b/c there is a threat to remove the classic editor after 2022 (why this would happen is still a mystery to me).

I am going to see if I have the tag issue in the new editor. I had not tried to add tags to the post. I only just tried that editor, and found it clunky and decided I’d rather use the straightforward one. I don’t need or really want any bells and whistles :)

  • You are more than welcome to just make a post and save it as a draft. Staff can see those if you’ll tell us which site / what the title of the post is. Test post or something along those lines is fine.
