Creating new, separate profile???

  • Unknown's avatar

I have had one site on WordPress – Dark Matter Press. Today I have added a blog – It’s Only Words. As far as content and – I hope – audience, these two are separate. How can I create a separate profile for It’s Only Words. Every time I click the link to set up a new user profile, I am take to the Dark Matter Press profile. I do not want to modify or change that profile or its Gravitar. I want top create a new profile and gravitar for the new blog.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello there,
You need to log out of WordPress.com and register a username account using a different email address and then transfer one blog to the new username account. See here please > Separate Username Accounts – Separate Blogs > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/08/14/separate-username-accounts-separate-blogs/

Sorry timethief. I don’t understand. As I understand it right now I have one account on which there are two (separate and distinct, I thought) blogs. Are you telling me that to have separate blogs I will have to have two accounts? Then why would it allow me to put more than one blog on an account?

I used to have two accounts – soundbytes and darkmatterpress – that I combined into the one account and both still worked as separate blogs. Now I’ve closed out soundbytes and created a new blog – thewordofbob – but it will not allow me to make a separate profile. I may be a bit slow, but I find your suggestion confusing.

Are you telling me that to have separate blogs I will have to have two accounts?

There is no limitation on the number of blogs one can register under any username account. However, every username account can be linked only to a single primary blog.

Every username account account has a single username or display name and a single gravatar that apply to every blog registered under that account.

Perhaps I misunderstood you. Please clarify.

Now I’ve closed out soundbytes and created a new blog – thewordofbob – but it will not allow me to make a separate profile.

Blog names are the same as usernames for the most part. Usernames can be turned into blog names, but blog names cannot be turned into usernames.

When we register a username account the matching blog is reserved for our future use. It cannot be obtained by anyone other than the person who has registered the matching username account.

Deleted blog URLs are not recycled, regardless of who registered and deleted them and no exceptions are made.

Once you change your username you will not be able to change it back and the old name will not be available for you or anyone to use. http://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/

This is getting weird, timethief. None of what you’ve written in your last message is at all relevant to what I had asked. It has nothing to do with what I had wanted to do.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m sorry I failed to articulate this in a way you can understand. I’ll tag this thread for Staff to explain this to you. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

In your second from last reply at 5:19 p.m., you asked me to clarify what t is I want to do. It’s simple. I want to create a separate user profile and gravitar for my two blogs on the account. One blog is for my small publishing business and the other is a personal blog. The profile for the one is not relevant to the other.

I went to the link you gave me in your first reply and followed instructions. It does not work. I signed out then went back to open a new, separate account under a separate e-mail address, intending to transfer my new blog there. It will not allow me to enter my information, saying the information (username, blog address) is already taken (by me). These designations took a lot of time and thought to develop. I do not want to change them.

    Why is this so complicated?

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you, timethief. I’ll wait to hear. :)

What I posted a link to is a post on my blog that describes how to how to proceed to disassociate two blogs (or more) registered under the same username account.

That requires creating a second username account while logged out of wordpress.com with different email address first. Then transferring one blog (or more) the blog to the new username account you created.

I guarantee that is does work.

  • Unknown's avatar

Nope. The form asks for a username. It also asks for a bog address (blogname,wordpress.com). As already mentioned, it will not allow me to proceed because it says these (and some other information is not available, is already in use). They are the ones already on my own new blog, and the ones I still want to use.

This is very frustrating. I still have received no help with this problem. Sorry to be a nuisance but perhaps I’m not as bright as some of you folks. I’d really like to get this blog up and running. Can someone help me out please?

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, I think I got it figured out. thewordofbob.wordpress.com is now a blog on its own, separate from darkmatterpress.wordpress.com. However, it’s also still on darkmatterpress.wordpress.com. When exported, should it not have disappeared from that account?

  • Unknown's avatar

Now this appears to be a worse mess than ever. Timethief had said she would flag this so someone from WordPress staff could contact me and get this fixed. That was two days ago and nobody has contacted me, either here or by e-mail.

Now it appears that my new blog is separate under the account for canuckauthor but as well is on the account for darkmatter press. Both blogs can be seen online – darkmatterpress.wordpress.com and thewordofbob.wordpress.com. However, I don’t seem to be able anymore to log in to Dark Matter Press to add posts or make other changes. This is all very, very frustrating!

What I want is for these two blogs to be quite separate from one another and to have log-in access to both of them. Is there a way we can clean up this mess???

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh, and the accounts are on separate e-mail addresses as I had been advised by Timethief: (email visible only to moderators and staff) (thewordofbob.wordpress.com) and (email visible only to moderators and staff) (darkmatterpress).

  • Unknown's avatar

If you redact the e-mails, how can you see that they are different. This is ridiculous!!!

Okay, I’ll try one of those trick things so you’ll a see. I repeat:

Oh, and the accounts are on separate e-mail addresses as I had been advised by Timethief: [bob at communication dot ca] (thewordofbob.wordpress.com) and [dark_matter at communication dot ca] (darkmatterpress).

    Very, very frustrating!!!

  • Unknown's avatar

Timethief’s instructions are good. It appears that instead of transferring the blog to another username account, which is towards the bottom of the page but the link dhould take you straight to it, you have exported and imported the blog contents, which is described at the top of the page.

    Now you have two options:

    1. If you want to keep the new blog URL you imported into then just make the old exported blog private. I would advise against deleting the original as sometimes the import takes a while to transfer all images – if you delete it too soon they will be lost.
    2. If you want the old name under the new user, delete or make private the imported blog then start over transferring ownership.
  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, now I can access Dark Matter Press – the dashboard, etc. – where a few minutes ago I was unable to do that. Both blogs still seem to be accessible – either one from the other, which is fine by me. However mail from WordPress to “word of bob” seems to go out twice – to both e-mail addresses. Will someone please explain to me what is going on? And if anythin g needs fixing, please fix it?

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, tandava108, that’s just confusing. What you suggested, I have already done. I created a new account under a different e-mail address (see posts above), I exported the new blog from the old account, I imported the new blog to the new account. Yet the new blog seems to be on both accounts and now the old blog seems also to be tied to the new account.

    I don’t understand at all your point “2” …

  • Unknown's avatar

I cannot work out what’s going on here. Maybe you subscribed to the blog updates with the “other” (non owner) email address? Timethief has already flagged the thread for staff attention, they will be able to look at your settings, which volunteers can’t. Since it is working with a few glitches the best option is to wait for staff to respond. Please be patient – they work through posts in order going from the time of the latest post to the thread.
