Creating New Sub-site

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I want to create a new WordPress site to act as a sub-site. The purpose of the site is to present data for an index, which means it will include interactive maps, tables, and graphics.

As it is a sub-site, it needs to resemble our main-site as much as possible.

A mock-up of what we want the sub-site to look like can be seen here.

Are there any themes that you can recommend that will allow us to create the mock-up as closely as possible?

    Best,

  • Hello Alasdair,

Your Google doc appears to not be set to public and I cannot access it, but I also don’t think WordPress.com is not a good fit for what you’re describing. Interactive maps don’t work on WordPress.com except on our Business Plan, and you’ll likely need several plugins as well for using the site as, essentially, a type of database.

While plugins can be used on WordPress.com on our Business Plan, I think you’d be better off building this using the open source WordPress software, perhaps retaining a freelance developer or development agency to help set things up. That way, if anything needs to be custom-built, they’ll be able to help with that as well.

Your current site at http://www.oxfordresearchgroup.org.uk/ is also built with the open source version of WordPress, so if you had someone else do that for you, I recommend you speak to them first.

Else you can ask for advice in the self-hosted WordPress forums, here:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Unrelated, it appears you’re paying for a WordPress.com Premium Plan you don’t actually need. You have a WordPress.com site with the free address, sustainablesecurity.wordpress.com, mapped to the domain, sustainablesecurity.org, but since last year June you’ve been redirecting that site to a completely different site at http://www.oxfordresearchgroup.org.uk.

You can achieve the exact same end-result as you have with all those upgrades by simply pointing your domain, sustainablesecurity.org, to the same hosting provider where you’re currently hosting oxfordresearchgroup.org.uk, and then connecting the domain to the same site on their end, which you’ll likely be able to do for free. Then you can cancel the Premium Plan on our end and save $99 a year.

If you prefer you can keep the site redirect upgrade to still redirect traffic coming to sustainablesecurity.wordpress.com, but given you’ve had a custom domain on that site since 2013, it’s very unlikely anyone is still trying to visit that site via the free WordPress.com address, so you can likely save the money you spend on that as well.

I see your Premium Plan renewed only a few days ago, so please let us know if we can help with a refund on that, or if you have any more questions.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply.

The mock-up should be visible now.

By open source, do you mean WordPress.org?

The initial set up we have in mind will be a very basic site with a map created by HTML code. (Essentially a copy and paste from mapping software). Can WordPress.org accommodate this?

Regarding the Premium Plan, if you could refund and cancel our plan that would be very kind.

    Best,

    Alasdair

  • The mock-up should be visible now.

Thanks. Here are a few themes specifically available on WordPress.com (there are self-hosted versions for all of them as well) that I think could be modified to look similar to that fairly easily:

    https://wordpress.com/theme/dara/

    https://wordpress.com/theme/karuna/

    https://wordpress.com/theme/gateway/

    https://wordpress.com/theme/sela/

There might be other WordPress themes that that are even closer, and there’s always the custom-built option as well if you want to integrate some unique functionality directly into the theme. These are the closest I know of of the themes we offer, though.

By open source, do you mean WordPress.org?

    Correct.

The initial set up we have in mind will be a very basic site with a map created by HTML code. (Essentially a copy and paste from mapping software). Can WordPress.org accommodate this?

You should be able to add that inside any page or post on a standard WordPress site, yes. Depending on the exact method you use it might not work on WordPress.com, though, as we restrict certain types of HTML for security reasons, and for example iframes, which are commonly used for interactive media, cannot be added to a site here except on our Business Plan.

Regarding the Premium Plan, if you could refund and cancel our plan that would be very kind.

I’ve cancelled and refunded your Premium Plan. You should receive the full refund in about 10 business days, depending on your bank’s processing times.

Your domain, sustainablesecurity.org, is currently still pointing to us, so I’ve left the domain mapping upgrade in place for now, as that domain will simply stop working if I renew it.

Please contact your domain provider, ascio.com, for help pointing that domain directly to your site at http://www.oxfordresearchgroup.org.uk/. Once you’ve done that the domain mapping won’t be necessary any more either, and you can remove it from the Purchases page:

    Many thanks for the reply.

    This is all very helpful.

I think what we will most likely do is move to a business plan WordPress for the new site.

Dara looks like a good shout for a theme.

Just to confirm though, iframes will work on business plan?

  • They will, with the provision you’ll need to install a plugin or a third party theme on the site first – doing this triggers some behind the scenes changes to how the site works.

But once you have the Business Plan you’ll be able to book a live screenshare session with another of our Happiness Engineers who can walk you through the process and answer any other questions you might have.

You can find detailed info on our Business Plan here:
