Creating Page "Portfolio" Images on Homepage – Difficult

I have the Sketch theme. However, on my homepage I want boxes (as shown in demo) for each of my pages with the featured image showing. Once the image is clicked, then I want the page to download with the corresponding posts assigned to that page.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi. How to do what you aim to do will be easier to accomplish once you learn the difference between the following types of publishable documents on WordPress.com:

    Posts
    Pages
    Portfolio projects

See also the Front Page support page, to learn how to create a static front page, and theCustom Menus support page, because you’ll probably want to create a custom menu if you choose to display a static front page.

I have the Sketch theme. However, on my homepage I want boxes (as shown in demo) for each of my pages with the featured image showing…

I think you’re referring to the portfolio displayed on the front page of the Sketch demo. It displays title and image links to projects, not to pages, because it has been assigned to the Portfolio Page Template, and has featured images assigned with the Featured Image module available in every post, page, and project editor with this theme.

Ok so I have figured out then how to create a Static Page with Images linking to my blog pages. However, the images are not aligning correctly. Any tips or tricks?

    @ amselig,

Is your static front page set to Portfolio Page template?

The fact that your portfolio page, https://thedogsnextdoor.wordpress.com/portfolio/, is empty indicates that you haven’t created and published any projects. Visit the projects support page I linked to above to learn about them. Projects are created with special projects editors.

    https://thedogsnextdoor.wordpress.com/dog-breeds/ is a published page.
I’m not sure about the other two:
    https://thedogsnextdoor.wordpress.com/health-wellness-safety/ and
    https://thedogsnextdoor.wordpress.com/training-tips-tricks/ may be unpublished pages.

The reason I did have the portfolios set up before was to link them to my equivalent pages with blog posts on each. However, the portfolio’s were not linking to the pages at all. Thus, I figured out a way to still get the look of the portfolios but where the link actually connects to the page I want it too. Basically I want my homepage to look as the following:

    MENU

    HEADER

LEFT SIDE (Feature Image of Dog Breeds that links to Dog Breeds Blog page) CENTER (Feature Image of Training Tips & Tricks that links to Training Tips & Tricks Blog page) RIGHT SIDE (Feature Image of Health Wellness & Safety that links to Health Wellness & Safety Blog page)

I still think you misunderstanding what a portfolio is and what is consists of.

However, the portfolio’s were not linking to the pages at all.

There is only one portfolio. It’s contains projects, if you create them, not pages. The portfolio doesn’t consist of pages or link to them. You could construct an imitation of the portfolio using pages instead of projects, and image links instead of the automatic links created by the Portfolio Page template on this theme when featured images are created, but the pages wouldn’t have optional tags or categories.

correction: “I still think you are misunderstanding…”

    @ amselig,

If you prefer to use pages rather than portfolio projects to create pages with rows of image links to pages, you might want to try one of the themes with the Grid Page Template option. These include:

Themes with an optional grid-based front page that contains links to posts include:

Themes with the Portfolio Page template option, where the content of the portfolio consists of rows of image and title links to projects include:

Following this interestedly and while I don’t understand what a portfolio is really, (despite reading the help), I think I’ve achieved what I want but would be grateful for any comments/advice.

Along the top I want menus and submenus that link to “pages” – ideally do you think the menus shouldn’t be clickable (only the sub menus) and how would I do that?

On the front page, I have 6 images in 2 rows on my front page, each of which links to “more content” shall we say (not sure whether page or portfolio).
I couldn’t seem to reorder the front page images, so removed and reentered them in the order I want – was there an easier way?

If you’d be so kind as to comment, you could check it out here: https://parishmag.wordpress.com/

    @ parishmag,
    Hi.

Along the top I want menus and submenus that link to “pages” – ideally do you think the menus shouldn’t be clickable (only the sub menus) and how would I do that?

I understand. If the top level page has no content you might not want it to be clickable. The way to accomplish this is described in the WordPress Tips article titled Custom menus, in Section C. How to, at “Other options, special cases and tricks,” (item c.):

    c. Submenu with non-linking top level tab
A tab that’s just a heading for a submenu, not a link, is created in the Links module: type anything after “http://”, type the name in the Label field, click Add to Menu; once it’s added to the menu, click the arrow to open it, delete everything in the URL field, click Save Menu.
Note: In some theme[s] this produces a differently looking tab; in that case replace the content of the URL field with a # instead of deleting everything.

I couldn’t seem to reorder the front page images, so removed and reentered them in the order I want – was there an easier way?

Yes. You may change the date and time in the publish module. Projects will display by default from left to right, top to bottom, in reverse chronological order.

Note that there may be a minimum number of hours between date/timestamps for WordPress to automatically follow the chronological project order.

I can’t thank you enough – I completely appreciate your help in this.

@amselig How did you put a picture at the very top of your front page before any text?

My front page is my portfolio page. Can I still put a picture at the very top?

Also, on my portfolio page, I have three different categories that when clicked on, goes into a page with all my pictures for that category. Does anyone know how I can rearrange the order of each thumbnail of my portfolio pics?

Lastly, when I click in to any of my portfolio pages, I see all the pictures in my portfolio, but some pictures are right next to each other and some have some space between the pictures. How can I add space between my pictures?

    Please help!
