Creating pages for subcategories that list thumbnails of relevant blogs
-
Hello, I am writing a travel blog and I have a menu item titled ‘Destinations’ with a drop down list of sub categories for each continent and a further list of sub categories for countries.
My menu is working but at the moment when I click on my menu item ‘Africa’ it takes me to my last post listed under the category ‘Africa’ and the reader has to click ‘older posts’ at the bottom of the page to see the other posts. This is really cumbersome when navigating the blog.
I would like to create a page for each continent that lists blogs relevant to that continent by a country heading. For each blog post under this country heading, I would like a thumbnail displayed with the blog title and/or excerpt, not the whole blog.
All of my blog posts are already linked to categories. How can I set up pages for my sub categories that are easy to navigate?
Thanks!

Hi there,
Here are instructions for setting up category pages as you describe: https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/
Please let us know if this does not answer all of your questions.

Hi, thanks for your quick reply.
Yes I looked at that page before I sent my message.
At the moment when I click on “Africa” in my menu it takes me to one blog about Africa. I would like it to take me to a page with excerpts from all the blogs about Africa so the reader can see all the topics at once.
Sorry if I didn’t make this clear before.
Thanks for your help!

Your “posts per page” setting at My Site(s) > Settings > Writing > Content types is evidently “1.” This setting not only affects the blog page, but also all archives pages such as year, month, and date archives, category and tag archives, author archives, etc.
I would like to create a page for each continent that lists blogs relevant to that continent by a country heading.
Category pages will do this, but you’ll need to modify the posts per page setting in order to display more than one post per category page.
For each blog post under this country heading, I would like a thumbnail displayed with the blog title and/or excerpt, not the whole blog
The Twenty Ten automatically shows excerpts of posts on category pages, but does not display featured images with posts on category pages or other archives pages.
One way to achieve this would be to create your own customized category pages by inserting Display Posts Shortcode into static pages, with the shortcode customized to include a thumbnail image with each post.

Hi!
Thanks for your response. I do indeed have my “posts per page” set at “1” because before my home page was just an endless string of posts and I didn’t like the way it looked.
I would still like my home page to only display one post and then I have “recent posts” listed in a widget at the bottom of the page in a footer.
Do you know if it is possible to just change the settings for category and archive pages and keep the home page with just one post?
Thanks!

Hi again,
Sorry about the long delay. :)
…and then I have “recent posts” listed in a widget at the bottom of the page in a footer.
You already have that, I notice.
Do you know if it is possible to just change the settings for category and archive pages and keep the home page with just one post?
Ordinarily, the blog page and archives pages (including category pages) would all display the same number of posts. It might be possible to have only the blog page show one post with CSS customization, but I don’t know about that. If you’d like to look into the possibility of accomplishing what you’ve described with custom CSS, then you may either submit a request to the CSS Customization forum or add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar at right here to call for staff attention.

One alternative that you might like to consider would be to use the More tag to truncate posts on the blog page and the archives pages. You could, for example, display five abbreviated posts instead of the one long one on the front page. See the More Tag support page for relevant information and instructions.
