  I’d like to start building my wordpress site, but it is asking me to connect my existing domain now and I would like to create the site before doing that. Is this possible?

  Create a free site. The address ending in .wordpress.com won’t be too critical if at some point you’re going to purchase an upgraded plan and use your domain name with that WordPress.com site.
