creating website/blog

I am at a loss as to how to navigate this WordPress/Bluehost site so that I can create a website/blog. I have done it before, but it was never this difficult. I can’t figure out how to add content, pages, design, anything! It’s advertised as easy, but it is far from easy. Who can I speak to to get some help? I can’t even figure out how to view my site, and when I do view it, there doesn’t seem to be anything there that I just worked on for hours. Help!! This is NOT easy. I have read tutorials, watched videos and even read the beginners blueprint manual. Nothing has helped. Thanks.

  • Hi snowbird0427, sorry to hear you’re struggling! You mentioned Bluehost, so it sounds like one source of confusion you’re dealing with is the free open source software vs our services.

If you’re hosted here on our services with a paid plan, you can get direct support for your questions. Running your own free DIY copy will be a bit of a different experience, like the difference between a recipe and going to a restaurant.

Also, for what it’s worth, I tried to view the Bluehost site you’ve connected here, and it says Coming Soon. If you’ll contact their support, they can help you remove that if that’s all you need.

Good morning, Supernova! Thank you for your response. I did not know that I could have WordPress as my hosting site! I was told I had to pick BlueHost or another one that is comparable in order to get the WordPress website. This is kinda crazy. So, do I just contact BlueHost and cancel/refund and then start over with WordPress hosting? Can I keep the same domain name? Thank you for your help.

  • Hello there,

No problem at all! There’s two sides to each of the .com and .org approach with WordPress and these can be explored here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Bluehost can be contacted hre: https://www.bluehost.com/help

I wouldn’t recommend cancelling the domain with them, as it might not become available (if at all).

You can map the domain from Bluehost to WordPress as per these instructions: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

After 60 days of registration, the domain is in a position to be transferred altogether if you desire: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

    I hope this helps.

Thank you for your help. I’m going to continue to try to get this thing set up, but I’m doubtful because their customer service/chat line is not much help. They want me to pay extra to have someone from Bluehost “help me” set up my blog. Like I said, at this point, I would rather just get a refund, and start over with WordPress.com

  • You would be more than welcome to move here. I’d recommend this:

    1. Do not cancel the domain with Bluehost (though you can cancel hosting after you move your work over)

    2. Add a site here and buy the plan you need. Note if you need outside plugins and themes, you’ll want the Business Plan, but the other plans do have several built in features and options. Premium is a great choice. You can compare features here: https://wordpress.com/pricing

    3. Move your existing content over. Here’s how: https://transferto.wordpress.com/self-hosted-wordpress-org/ — and since you’ll have a paid plan, you can jump into direct help with support if you need it, at https://wordpress.com/help/contact

Let us know if you need more help with this!
