Creating WordPress website
-
I would like to create a WordPress website. I already own a domain name (from a previous version of the site) that I would like to transfer to the new site. I would ideally like to start by mapping the old domain name to WordPress while I get the new site started and then eventually transfer it to WordPress altogether. Is it possible to do this without too much trouble? Or is it better just to transfer the domain at the start?

Hi –
I would suggest that you build the site on the free address we give you and then connect the domain once it’s ready to go. You can map it now and transfer it later if you want. The transfer takes 5 days so keep that in mind when preparing to move the domain.

Thanks for your reply. To make sure I understand, you would recommend 1) mapping the domain to the new WordPress site and then 2) fully transferring the domain once the new site is up and running?

That all depends on what you prefer, there are no rights or wrongs here :)
You can either map it – your domain will stay with the current registrar and you’ll need to go to their site to manage anything domain related.
You can also transfer the domain to WordPress.com right away and we’ll be your new registrar. This way you’ll manage everything from one place and you’ll be able to reach support with any domain related-issues :)

What staff-zinnia suggested was to start building your site with the free subdomain (like one ended with .wordpress.com) before bringing in your custom domain. This way, your visitors will still see the old site while you work on the new one and the change will be more smooth.
