creation of home page

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to create a (static) home page. I was able to type in the title and a sub-title, but want to put some images on it. But when I go to the dashboard, there seems to be no way to “edit” that title page. What am I doing wrong?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

I see that you’re using your page titled “Home” as the static hoe page for your site. You can edit the contents of that page by going to Pages > All Pages in your dashboard. Then, click on the title “Home” to edit that page.

Please let me know if I can provide any further help with that. :)

    Thank you, Rachel.
The problem is, although I did create a Home page (or thought I did), and took the steps in the WordPress instructions to make it a static page, and then (obviously) was able to write in the title and subtitle (which you can see, as proof that i was able to do that), when, on dashboard, I go to Pages> All Pages, that home page does not show up, so I cannot edit it.

    Hi there,

Your site title (“Quel Mazzolin di Canti”) and tagline (“Lyrics to Old Italian Songs”) are the same for your entire site, and those are set under Settings > General in your dashboard.

However, the home page is the one titled “Home” under Pages > All Pages in your dashboard. That’s the one you’ll need to edit if you want to change the content that appears on your home page.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Sorry, Rachel, but I am not referring to that site; rather, to the new one I am trying to set up, called http://www.patchesandmatches.com

Rachel, again I apologize for not clarifying the new site, which is http://www.patchesandmatches.com.
Based on all the advice I am getting from WordPress, I am making good progress in setting up the site.
However, I still have questions/problems about the Home page.

    1. I wrote earlier that “Home” appeared twice on the menu – – one was the one I created and the other seemed to be a default Home, which I could not edit or delete. Now (for some unknown reason), only one “Home” appears on the menu, which is better. However, it is the default Home. To see the Home that I created, you have to click on Home (and then it switches to “my” Home page). How can I delete that default Home and have my desired Home page appear automatically when the viewer goes to the website, without having to click on anything?

    2. Could you please tell me how to make sure that all the pages are static, except for Posts. I have tried to do that, but I don’t think that selection (“static”) is being saved. I do not want any posts or other changes on these pages.

    3. Last (for now??), on the Home page and other pages is it possible to remove some of the stuff that is not being used? For example, the search widget, and “recent comments”, “archives”, “categories” and “meta”, and especially “leave a reply”, since the only replies should be on the “Posts” page.

Please tell me where I can get information on how to do these things. If you could kindly check out some of these things yourself, such as checking if the pages have been made static, I would be very grateful.

    Thanks. Anselmo

    Hi Anselmo,

Sorry about that! Thanks for clarifying which site you’re working on.

    1. How can I delete that default Home and have my desired Home page appear automatically when the viewer goes to the website, without having to click on anything?

There’s two steps to make this happen:

    1. You will need to set up your “Home” page so it’s the front page for your site. You can do that under Settings > Reading in your dashboard. Next to Front page displays, select A static page. In the dropdown menu next to Front page: select Home. Be sure to save your changes when you’re done.

    2. To remove the double “Home” link, you can set up a custom menu for your site. That will let you choose exactly what pages to show in the menu. We have instructions for setting up a custom menu here: Custom Menus

    2. Could you please tell me how to make sure that all the pages are static, except for Posts. I have tried to do that, but I don’t think that selection (“static”) is being saved. I do not want any posts or other changes on these pages.

Any pages you set up under Pages > All Pages in your dashboard are static pages. Only the page that shows your blog posts is not static (because it changes every time you create a new blog post).

    3. Last (for now??), on the Home page and other pages is it possible to remove some of the stuff that is not being used? For example, the search widget, and “recent comments”, “archives”, “categories” and “meta”, and especially “leave a reply”, since the only replies should be on the “Posts” page.

You can edit what appears in the sidebar by going to Appearance > Widgets in your dashboard. Each item in the sidebar is a separate widget, and you can delete the ones you don’t want there. If you remove all of the widgets, the sidebar will disappear.

To remove the comment section (“leave a repy”) from your pages, you will need to disable comments on those pages. We have instructions for doing that here: Enable and Disable Comments

Please let me know if I can provide any further help with this. :)

Wow – your advice addresses all my issues, so thank you. It may take me a while to work through all of them, but I will try. Very helpful.

Rachel, this is a follow-up. I tried all your suggestions and they all seem to work fine (except the one below), which means that your instructions are clear enough even for an idiot like me.
However, I still cannot remove “Leave a Reply”. I have read the WordPress instructions you gave the link for, and tried to follow them.
The instructions said to go to the “Discussions module”. The only thing I could find on the Dashboard was “Discussions”, in the “Settings” menu. Is that the correct one?
Unfortunately, the boxes to check or un-check there are not exactly the same as in the WordPress Instructions (for starters, 3 boxes instead of 2 at the top, and many more boxes below). In any case, I unchecked the top 3 boxes and clicked on “Save”, but my page still has the “Leave a Reply” section at the bottom. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi there,

I’m glad those suggestions worked! Disabling comments can be a little confusing, so don’t worry — I’m happy to help more with those. :)

There are two different places where you can enable or disable comments. If you go to Settings > Discussion in your dashboard, you can disable comments there. However, that only affects new posts and pages that you publish after that point; it won’t change the settings on pages you already published on your site.

You can disable comments on pages you already published by going to Pages > All Pages in your dashboard. You can either disable the comments on each page, one by one, or you can bulk edit a bunch of pages at once. Since you want to remove the “Leave a Reply” comments section on all your pages, I’d recommend using the bulk edit.

Here are the steps for doing that:

    1. Make sure you’re on the Pages > All Pages screen in your blog dashboard.
    2. Select the posts you would like to modify or check the box next to “Title” column at the top to select all pages on that screen.
    3. Select Edit from the Bulk Actions drop down menu.
    4. Click the Apply button.
    5. Change the options for Comments and Pings to Allow or Do not allow.
    6. Click the Update button.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks. That worked very well. I was able to disallow Comments. Didn’t see a box for Pings there, but that really does not matter to me as much as getting that clutter off the pages, which has now been done. So, thank you again.
The site is almost completed – – lots of images to upload – – I hope you will take a look at it sometime.
