Credits and Domains

Another question from the Newbie on the block.
Now I am trying to purchase my Domain or am I trying to purchase Domain Mapping? Do I have to purchase my Domain elsewhere?
Because I check the domain I want on another site and it is available worldwide, yet on wordpress it says it cannot be used….for whatever reason. Are there guidelines as to what can or cannot be used? I don´t know if it is me, but it sure would be helpful to have Step 1, Step 2, Step 3. This process seems so simple but something really is missing in the explanation.
Thanks for your patience wordpress! -
And now I understand that I can buy the Domain from WordPress for $15…. So where is this link?
And then pay $10 for Domain Mapping. Is that correct?
-
What if I want to put a photo which is clickable and leads to my other site? What kind of service do I need then? Domain with Domain Mapping and CSS?
-
To buy a domain: Go to Settings – Domains – enter the domain you want – pay the credits.
BUT there are only certain kinds of domains available through wp.com. .com blogs are fine, for instance, but not .co.uk. I was trying to find a list for you but I haven’t found it yet. If the domain is available, then entering it will take you to the page that asks you to pay. If you want another kind of domain, you’ll have to register it somewhere else and then map the blog to it.
I’m not sure what you mean by your last question. If you want to put a photo on your wp.com blog and make it a link to another site you don’t need any upgrades at all. Just upload the photo as normal, then make it a link. You can either do this in a post or (so long as the image fits) put it in the sidebar. If you want it to be your header, then I don’t think even CSS would do this for you. Plus it would be extremely confusing for your readers.
-
Wait a minute. The $15 is for the domain AND domain mapping.
As for making the header clickable to another site – I do not think that is possible here at wordpress.COM at all.
-
I just wanted to put a small photo in the sidebar and make it clickable.
Re names. My confusion is, I tried my core name : destinationpanama.com it would not take it. Then I tried destinationpanamablog.com, same thing, so maybe it has to do with my core name…. that is what I cannot figure out because it was OK on an outside Domain search engine. I just want to find out what the guidelines are to figure out why my names are not working.
-
OK, let’s start with the easy part. To put a photo in your sidebar, you need to know the location of the image and the address you want to link to. Here’s the FAQ: http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/07/01/how-to-write-links/
In a text widget, you write:
<a href="adress you are linking to"> <img src="url of the image"> </a>Now, to the second issue.
If you already have a domain (I assume that is what you mean by the “core name”) and you want to map it to your wordpress.COM blog, then you want domain mapping. If you don’t already own the domain AND the domain is available, you can purchase the domain AND domain mapping for $15. The FAQ on that is here http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/10/domain-mapping/
Is http://destinationpanama.com/ your domain? Because if it isn’t, then it is not available. If it is, then by mapping it to your blog, the website will no longer be available. If that is your website, let me know and I’ll give you another option.
-
destinationpanama.com that is not my domain,
destinationpanama.wordpress is my site.so I tried combinations, destination-panama, destination-panama-blog etc… but no luck. I was able to see them available on a different site for Domain purchase which is what is confusing me….
so my questions are, what combinations are allowed… are hyphens and periods allowed… should I purchase the domain elsewhere
thanks for your help

re the image, does it have to be stored somewhere on the web? or can I upload it to wordpress? I want the image to be a clickable link to my home page if possible. Thanks
-
First of all, your blog it http://destinationpanama.wordpress.com I’m being very specific here because you have to have the full domain name, including the .com part. If you have checked other sites and destination-panama.com is available AND you put the .com part in the url thing for buying your domain through wordpress and it didn’t go thru, then I think you can safely assume that dashes in the url (unusual, BTW, but not unheard of) is NOT allowable. To my knowledge, there is no list anywhere of anything that says that certain characters are not allowed, however, it wouldn’t surprise me if that were the case.
If you want to purchase destination-panama.com thru WordPress, you need to contact support to see if you can do it.
Otherwise, buy the domain elsewhere and use the domain mapping feature ($10) to map it to your wordpress.com blog.

You really need to be more careful with your typing. Your site is not destinationpanama.wordpress. It is http://destinationpanama.wordpress.com and you won’t be able to successfully use the domain mapping upgrade unless you are absolutely exact in your typing. Are you saying you want to use destinationpanama.com instead? That’s doable.
I don’t think punctuation is allowed in domain names, although I am not entirely sure. Do NOT use periods, those are definitely not allowed. And my advice is to purchase through WordPress, unless you definitely don’t want your name associated with your blog (ie you need additional privacy). It’s far cheaper, and they’re very good to work with. The reason those other sites are saying you can buy those names is, they already own them. They will charge you more.
And yes, you can just upload the image to WordPress.

I was able to register with WordPress: http://destination-panama-blog.com
For whatever reason, destinationpanama was unavailable…. Thanks for your help. Now I ask what you suggest, that the site is at the new name and redirected from the old name or vice versa (for SEO purposes)?
Like this, or the opposite?
Domain: destination-panama-blog.com Redirecting to destinationpanama.wordpress.com (Put blog hereThanks!!!
-
Don’t change anything! The wordpress.com domain is correctly pointing to the new name. (You couldn’t have destinationpanama.com because someone already has it, as I pointed out above.)

Im trying to do the same thing …. domain map another address to my blog but don’t have the option to pay the $10 when I go to the upgrades window.
-
It isn’t the upgrades window, it’s Settings -> Domains :)
I have a question on this subject too. Does anyone know what happens if you fail to renew your domain? For example if i bought one through wordpress.com, but after a year I don’t make another payment? Would I be able to revert to my wordpress.com blog, or would I have to start over?
-
If you fail to renew it, anyone else can buy it and then you’re screwed. Your blog will automatically revert to whatever.wordpress.com and ALL THE LINKS GOING TO YOUR CUSTOM DOMAIN WILL NOT WORK. In fact, if someone purchases your domain, those links will go to THEIR blog instead from then on.
