Critical error

I updated to the newest version of WordPress and my site crashed. It doesn’t seem to be a plugin, I didn’t get that message, just ‘There has been a critical error on this website.’ I’m willing to scrub the whole thing and start again, it was time for a full update anyway.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi @suestanley , I’m guessing you’re referring to a site that isn’t hosted here? The free one seems okay — we’re managing the updates and security for you.

If you’re working with your own copy of WordPress hosted elsewhere, can you contact your host for help with this guide to troubleshooting common WordPress errors? This general troubleshooting guide may help too. I’m guessing either the update didn’t finish or it doesn’t get along with some other code on your site, and those guides can help you through even when you can’t get to the dashboard.

Going forward, these forums are for the free-tier sites hosted here on our servers. You can find the forum for free WordPress installations here; you’ll want to use instead.

Here’s a short article on the difference between the WordPress software and the services by WordPress.com. We’re basically managed hosting; we take care of SSL hosting plus security, maintenance, backups, spam filtering, etc. And you can have plugins and outside themes so long as your plan supports them. Let us know if you have any questions!
