Critical Error

I updated plug ins and my site crashed with the critical error message. EVERY troubleshooting guide or forum wants me to go in and either deactivate plugins or activate a new theme – NONE of this is possible because I can’t access ANYTHING on my site. Anytime I try, the screen goes to the critical error page.
This is particularly acute because we are about to get some national exposure and the site is down. I don’t know what to do. Please help.

I would add that the suggestion to go in manually through FTP would be great – IF I could access it. I can not.
