“Critical error: message – need recovery mode link
-
Dear WordPress,
I am seeing a “critical error” message when I try to view my site. The message tells me to look for the support email. I have received the email but the “recovery mode” link had already expired by the time I came to use it. How do I request a new “recovery mode” link.
Thank you.

@smpsluton we can’t help as your site isn’t running on the wordpress.com platform. You must head over to wordpress.org to get further advice. Also ignore the spamreply by sikhadoai

Hello @smpsluton
I have investigated this issue for you (the site is on WordPress.com, of course) and it looks like the error was caused by the Time Since Date plugin. This is a pretty old plugin, and hasn’t been updated for over a decade. It is likely not compatible with our current platform, particularly since the update to PHP 8.1.
I have deactivated the plugin. The site seems to be loading.
If you encounter an issue like this, or just an error on your site, here are a couple resources that would be helpful:
- Solve Problems With Plugins
- Site Monitoring – WordPress.com Developer Resources – this is a very helpful tool that enables you to check your site’s logs for errors that could point to a cause of the issue
- WP-CLI – WordPress.com Developer Resources – You can access WP-CLI via SSH. This can be helpful if you are unable to access your site’s plugins to troubleshoot them. You can use CLI commands to manage themes and plugins, including deactivating them to test for whatever may cause the issue on the site.
- A quick tip: if you can’t seem to access plugins or themes in CLI due to errors, try adding
--skip-themes --skip-pluginsbefore your command (for example:--skip-plugins --skip-themes plugin list). This bypasses the errors so you can dig a little deeper.
