‘Critical Error’ with Jetpack

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello. I use bluehost hosting with wordpress for my website. I have been unable to log in to the dashboard of my wordpress website, and the screen says ‘There has been a critical error on your website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions’. I logged in to the website using recovery mode, and saw that the issue is with the WordPress jetpack plugin. I disabled the plugin, which fixed my website, but it also took away my access to several Jetpack-provided services that I need in order to run my site. How can i restore my site to how it was when I could log into the dashboard without using recovery mode, while still using the features of jetpack? A phone call with a WordPress tech support member would be amazing.

  • We do not provide phone support, but we’d be happy to help you here.

You’ll need to access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), navigate to /wp-content/plugins/ and delete the whole /jetpack/ directory there.

Once that’s done, you’ll be able to reinstall Jetpack normally from Plugins > Add New in your site’s Dashboard.

Also, you can reach Jetpack support at https://jetpack.com/contact-support/?rel=support if you have a paid plan, or https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack/ if you do not.

    Hi

I’ve got the same problem – Bluehost web host, WordPress.com site. I’ve also got the critical error message. I managed to get in via the recovery mode link and remove Jetpack, but have lost the functionality and get the same error message back when I try to reinstall it.

    This is what I’m running:
    WordPress version 5.5.3
Current theme: Twenty Sixteen (version 2.2)
Current plugin: Jetpack by WordPress.com (version 9.2)
    PHP version 7.3.25

I’m a total newbie to blogging and don’t know what an SFTP or FTP is or where I would find this. Are you able to guide me, please? I was using the free Jetpack plugin.

    Thanks for any advice!

    Bluehost web host, WordPress.com site

If your host is Bluehost, your site is not a WordPress.com site: all the WordPress.com sites are hosted by WordPress.com

I’m super confused then because my WordPress editing page says WordPress.com but when I tried to update Jetpack it took me to Bluehost (who I thought I was with). How would I know for sure which I am using?

Sorry to ask obvious questions but I was convinced I was on the paid site?

I definitely pay for bluehost hosting, but have a wordpress-run site. I think bluehost and wordpress are connected, which is why I chose to use those two together. I’m also new to this whole thing and have yet to find a solutoin that works for this problem.

I am in the same boat – I do pay Bluehost but maybe I don’t need to?! I cannot find a solution for this problem even though I’ve accessed the recovery mode and uninstalled/reinstalled Jetpack.

I joined and got my domain name through Bluehost which automatically put me on WordPress for writing and editing.

  • Hi there,

To clarify, Bluehost uses a different version of the WordPress platform, the free “open source” version of WordPress. It is different than the “managed WordPress” version we offer here on WordPress.com.

As @galois mentions, It is true that your Bluehost site is a “WordPress” site, but it is not a “WordPress.com” site. They are not the same thing.

To get help with your Bluehost site, you will need to contact Bluehost for support, as they are the “host” of your site, and host all the files required to make WordPress work on your site.

I’m super confused then because my WordPress editing page says WordPress.com but when I tried to update Jetpack it took me to Bluehost

To further clarify, on WordPress.com we have features that you do not normally find on the free “open source” version of WordPress that Bluehost uses, such as our WordPress.com commenting system, customization tools, social media connections, etc. You can use the Jetpack plugin to add these features to your site (Bluehost adds it for you actually) and to use Jetpack does require that you have an account with us.

However, we do not actually host your site (Jetpack is just adding a few features your site would not normally come with) so for that reason we are not able to look into your issue. You can ask Bluehost support to take a look however. Hope this helps!
