Cropping an image to meet Bueno’s 490×200 requirement
-
The whole idea of exploring themes is irresistible to me and I recently turned to BUENO. One very nice feature of Bueno is that with Feature Images, one can set a large rectangular image under the header and above any text. I like this.
The downside is that the Featured Image must measure 490 x 200 pixels. If the image is smaller than that, it ends up distorted in the post. if the image is larger, then it is cropped. In the latest, Obama’s head was cropped off. Oops.
I figured out that if I can enlarge my image to be more than 490 x 200 I can then crop the way I want and hope that that turns out ok, but is there a better way to set those measurement parameters and adjust a crop box to crop out where I want the crop to be? Because if not, then the Bueno Featured Image becomes time consuming.

There are many free programs which you can use to optimize and resize images prior to uploading them into your wordpress.com blog.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/I don’t use the wordpress.com cropping feature at all. I choose to use free online image editors and I prepare each image to exact size specifications prior to uploading. That way there won’t be any loss of quality or distortion.

Tmethief, I clicked the link to your blog and the site that you said you use. I then uploaded a picture that originally is 522 x 292. I filled in the boxes for desired width and height — the size that WordPress says is necessary for the Featured Image to look right — 490 x 200 pixels.
I clicked the “Optimize” button and when I got the downloaded picture, it was/is 267 x 200 pixels. This is not the size that WordPress wants to use for Featured Images.
What did I do wrong and how should I be doing it so that I can upload to my post an image of 490 x 200?

OK, I just now went to one of the sites that say not “optimize” but “re-size“ and still do not get a good picture. One was distorted and the other which retains proportions is not the right size.
Is there something more I should be knowing? Is there more to Feature Images?

@Lorna
The blog you have linked to your username and that you drop signature links to at the end of your comments (tsk, tsk signature links are not allowed allowed at wordpress.com – your username link to them makes them redundant) is displaying the INuit Types theme and not Bueno. Therefore I am confused about what you are asking.This is the support documentation entry for featured images >

This is a helpful post re: featured posts/images in Inuit Types
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/category/featured-image/The bottom line is that when using images as featured images if the image you have uploaded is not a full sized image then when you set a featured image will be blown up and distorted (loss of image quality). So if you upload a thumbnail image into a post and then set that thumbnail image as a featured image the image quality will be lost and there will be distortion.
Also note that if you upload a thumbnail image into a post from a media site knowing they are notoriously strict about copyright violations under Fair Use you are okay when it comes to posting the thumbnail size only. However, if that image is blown up because you set it as a featured image then the copyright holder of the image may indeed claim you have violated the limitations of Fair Use.
