Cropping isn’t working correctly in the new Image Editor

I think there is a bug in the WordPress.com Image Editor. I can’t crop a jpeg image.

These two images are in the gallery of this page. The first image is the original. The second is a duplicate upload of the first image but I used the WordPress.com Image Editor to crop the image (a closeup of the child’s face), in 1:1 aspect ratio.
Instead of displaying the cropped image in 1:1, it distorts the entire image in the 1:1 aspect ration.
I think I used the crop tool correctly. I first specified the 1:1 aspect ratio, then held the Shift key down while I dragged the crop region. Then I clicked the Crop icon. The cropped image did in fact then appear correctly on the screen. Then I clicked Save. Just to be sure, I also clicked the “Save all changes” button.
Am I doing something wrong here?
Would someone please try this and see if cropping works for you on an image in a page gallery? Thanks!

The only size change I made was to a 1:1 aspect ratio. I changed it to 1:1. I did not enter numbers in the the “Selection” dimension fields.
But even if I don’t specify any change in the size or aspect ratio, I get the same distorted result. Instead of displaying only the cropped region of the image in the new crop dimensions, it displays the entire image in the new cropped dimensions.

Of course, just to rule out that possibility that I had a corrupted image file, I tried using the Cropping Tool on several different images in my Library, and I get the exact same distorted results in each attempt.

It may just be a WordPress error. You could try resizing the image after you put it in your post, to try to keep the aspect ratio – but does it shoe that way in the visual editor?
You should also try contacting support.

Also, the crop tool has been broken for a while now – it work’s for others, and doesn’t for others. It may be that.

Thanks for reporting this issue. We’re aware of the problem, and the developers are working to fix it. The issue is not actually with the tool itself, but rather with how the images get stored and replicated across data centers. We’ll let you know as soon as we have it fixed!
