Cropping My Header
-
Hello. I recentlly made a new header for my site. My site’s theme is 2010 and my header was 940 x 181. When I went to upload my header, wordpress asked me to crop it. I cannot crop my header becuase I would loose the images on my header. I didn’t think 940 x 181 needed to be cropped.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Is it forcing you to, or offering the option?
The default header I’m using is 940 x 198.

You’ve been through this page, right?

Maybe upload it to your Media Library first?
What’s the file size in Kb? Maybe WP thinks it’s too ‘heavy’.

If you have it in your Media Library or hosted somewhere else on the web, post a link to it here so I can try it.

As notawoodpecker said (first reply) the header image in 2010 is 940×198 pixels. Anything other than that will require cropping. You can see this in Appearance > Header as well: it says “Images of exactly 940 × 198 pixels will be used as-is”.
-
OK. It wants 940 x 198 exactly. Yours was 942 x 179. Once I resized to the right dimensions, it was accepted.

Pi, I also tried 940 by 179, but it refused that also. I can understand rejecting oversized images, but I’m not sure why it rejected the undersized one.
Oh well. I guess they mean ‘exact’ literally.

Here’s the .jpg version which is around 50Kb: http://i.imgur.com/1l5499x.jpg
Here’s the .png version that swelled to a little over 330Kb for some reason: http://i.imgur.com/PQasE2X.png
I’d use the .jpg version if I were you.

@hf556: If you want no cropping, you need to create an image in the exact dimensions the theme requires. You said “I recentlly made a new header for my site”. How did you “make” it? Didn’t you use an image editing application?
@NAW: It doesn’t really “reject” anything – you mean it wouldn’t accept it without cropping. That’s because the header image has fixed pixel dimensions: the displayed version has to be 940×198, so smaller or larger doesn’t make a difference, it has to be cropped to become 940×198. And actually trying to use an undersized image is worse, as cropping will involve blowing up as well, and you know what this means.

notawoodpecker, thankyou for the links for the header but it looks a bit blurry and differant, doesnt it. Is there a chance it could look the same as the link I gave you?
-
Well, I don’t really see any blurring, but it could be an artifact of the resizing. The .jpg might be a bit different due to the compression, but the .png shouldn’t be.
If you created it originally, try it again to the exact dimensions.
-
“Is there a chance it could look the same as the link I gave you?”
Of course not. Your original was 19 pixels too short: you cannot possibly blow up an image and expect it to look the same. If you don’t want to lose part of the image and if you don’t want to lose quality, you have to create the image in the exact dimensions the theme requires – period.
