CSS code broke the website and can’t get back in

  • Unknown's avatar

We edited a couple of lines of CSS on the style sheet and the entire site went down, and we can no longer log in to the admin dashboard either. How can we get back in and subvert the changes?

  • Hi there,

This is why the editor at Appearance ->Edit in the open source WordPress software shows a warning that you shouldn’t edit those files unless you’re sure what you’re doing :)

A much safer way to edit CSS is to just add it as additional CSS via the Customizer.

To fix this you’ll likely need to manually reinstall your site’s theme via FTP at your hosting provider, to replace the files that you changed with the original version.

You’ll need to contact your hosting provider for FTP access.

For more help with this, please ask in the self-hosted WordPress forums at https://wordpress.org/support/. Your site is not hosted with us on WordPress.com, so we have no control over how it works, and it’s using a different version of the WordPress software than we use on WordPress.com.
