CSS customizations lost in new theme

  • Unknown's avatar

We just moved to the Pinboard premium theme and appear to have lost all of our CSS customizations. We were under the impression that this wouldn’t happen in a change from one theme to another. Were we mistaken, or is this a glitch? Either way, is there any way for us to restore our CSS customization? Will it come back if we switch back to our old theme and ask for a refund ASAP? Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This isn’t NOT a glitch. All CSS editing is theme specific and if you do not remove it when changing themes and replace it with correct theme specific CSS then you get experience undesired consequences.

First off, http://trashbackwards.com is not a WordPress.com site. In fact, it doesn’t appear to be a WordPress site at all.

In case you are talking about a WordPress.com site, CSS is theme specific. The CSS for one theme will not work with another.

You will have to redo the CSS changes you had on Pinboard. Go to Appearance > Custom Design > CSS, delete all the CSS you had in the window, click the “save stylesheet” button and then you can begin again. You may want to save your existing CSS for the other theme to a plain text file in the event you want to move back to the other theme.

Ok, I see the “blog” link on the site you had referenced and it is a WordPress.com site. The second and third paragraph apply.

Thanks for the catch. I thought the reference was to http://rockfarmer.me/

Sorry about the confusion re: our blog – I selected from the menu that WordPress offered me when selecting which blog I was talking about; I’m not sure why the link goes to our self-hosted site, but our blog is here at WP, blog.trashbackwards.com

Not a problem. See my replies above.

Thanks for your help. I understand that CSS is theme specific, but when we’ve changed themes in the past, our existing CSS customizations were still there when we clicked on the appropriate CSS link. This time, there’s nothing there at all, just the “Welcome to CSS” message. It would just be faster for us to re-work our previous CSS than to generate it all over again, even with the required theme-specific changes. Thanks for your help.

@timethief, no problem and g’day to you.

@thistimethisspace, thanks for your help. Please see my message above. I am not looking for help w/ RockFarmer, but with blog.trashbackwards.com – The link that WP auto-populated into the bottom of my original message goes to our self-hosted site, not the blog we have that is indeed hosted here at WP.

Go to appearance > custom design > CSS and look down in the revisions section and you should be able to recover the latest version of your CSS. Do know that until you get all the selectors and all the declarations reworked that your site may “blow up” and look like a bomb went off.

@thistimethisspace, I’m sorry for the confusion. I am the admin of multiple blogs here at WP, all accessed through my Rockfarmer user ID. One of my blogs is blog.trashbackwards.com – That’s the blog I’m asking for help with, it is hosted by WP.com, and we have paid for the upgrade to enable CSS.

    trashbackwards.com Is Hosted by Amazon.com

@thesacredpath, thanks – I don’t see any revisions area at all in the CSS interface. The entire CSS interface looks new to me, so perhaps that’s theme-specific, too, or WP has just moved to a new layout. In any event, we can’t find our old CSS. And I’m all too familiar with the “blow up” look you’re talking about – This time it came as no surprise! :-)

@thistimethisspace, Yes, trashbackwards.com, our web app, is hosted by Amazon Web services but BLOG.trashbackwards.com is hosted here at WP.com.

    I’m history. Have fun.

@thistimethisspace, although I see that you appear to have left this thread: Yes, thank you – I’m fully aware of the difference between WP.com and WP.org. I’m asking for help here with a WP.com-hosted blog. I’m sorry if I’ve confused you, thistimethisspace, although I certainly appreciate your seeming dedication to showing me the light. I assure you, blog.trashbackwards.com is hosted by WordPress.com.
