CSS customizing of footer area and accessing footer widgets in customize window

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello, Can you please tell me how to add text to the footer area as is seen on the site: http://morgenmuffel.in I removed the WP and Zuki theme accreditation line and would like to replace it with a line about Copyright, and I would like to add a title above the social media icons as per Travel Inspiration (on the morgenmuffel site). Can you please tell me if this is possible using CSS and how? Also, when I try to edit Footer widgets 3, 4, and 5 in the Customize window that opens in the right hand side of the screen, I am unable to scroll down to access them. They are totally inaccessible…can you tell me what I can do to be able to get to them? Thank you.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    I removed the WP and Zuki theme accreditation line and would like to replace it with a line about Copyright…

    Hi @cookiemonster1958, you are not allowed to hide the WordPress.com and theme footer credits per our Terms of Service (#11). Even the VIP sites here at WordPress.com (CNN, Time, etc.) are required to keep the footer credits. See the Frequently Asked Questions on the Custom Design support page for more information.

    The site you provided as an example is not hosted here at WordPress.com, but is a self-hosted WordPress site. On those sites you can remove the footer credits.

    If you could, please remove the following CSS from your custom CSS so that the existing footer credits are restored.

    At WordPress.com, you are allowed to restyle the footer credits to better fit with your design as long as they remain readable.

    To add some text above the existing credits, you can use the following CSS. I’ve included a number of other declarations (size, color, font weight, line height) so that you can style your footer text so that it stands out more. Give this a try and see what you think. You can of course edit the content and colors and such.

    #colophon #site-info:before {
        color: #cc0000;
        content: "This is my Copyright";
        font-size: 130%;
        font-weight: bold;
        line-height: 35px;
    }
    #colophon #site-info ul a {
        padding-top: 20px;
        color: #777 !important;
        font-weight: normal;
    }

    Hi SacredPath, thanks for your feedback. The WP and Zuki theme attributions are back in the footer: I had thought I could take it out given I paid for the WP domain but I’m happy to put it back in again. The only problem is that it took five-or-so tries for the system to accept the code and put it back in. Same problem with the other code you’ve given me…each time I insert it it doesn’t stick. I will try again later today when hopefully this “glitch” is worked out. Meanwhile, can I ask another question about the CSS editor? When I open the Customize editor (a window ‘bar’ opens on right side of screen) to work on the Front Page Footer widgets, I am unable to access the Widgets for footers 3, 4, and 5…there is no way to scroll down in the window-bar to access them and the options do not scroll up either. This seems like a design fault…do you have any ideas (other than accessing them via the widget page in the dashboard). Thanks again for your help.

    @cookiemonster1958, there was an issue with the Customizer that has been fixed now. Sorry for the problems on that. Give things another try and if you have problems, please let us know.

    Hi again Sacred Path, I was able to add some of my own code to the CSS editor, which does appear to be working now, however, when I added the code you gave me above, absolutely nothing shows up! Strange. Any ideas? Also, when I talked about the Customizer, I mean the editing bar that opens on the right side of screen to allow us to make changes to the Custom Design features. I just checked and I am still unable to access Footer 3, 4, and 5 in the footer widget. Did I misunderstand, or are you working to fix this feature? Thank you.

    I take some of what I said about your code back! The color and spacing has changed. What I don’t see is anything about the copyright text….is there possibly something missing?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there, you need an opening and closing double quote mark on the content text string, like this:
    content:"Copyright 2014 Creative Living Geneva";

    I just tested in your customizer, and if my browser window is shorter than the widget display, I can’t access the last couple of widgets. I’m going to file a bug report on this, but in the meantime, you can edit and manage your widgets from within your dashboard at Appearance > Widgets. There you will be able to access all the widget areas.

    Sorry for the problem.

    Oops, I removed the quotes thinking they were not necessary but only to indicate where the text should go. They have now been reinstated and it looks very nice. Thanks for the code! I’m glad (sort of) that I’m not the only one experiencing the customizer problem and I appreciate your filing a bug report. Meanwhile, I’ll use the widget page in the dashboard. Can I also mention a small thing that would be so useful to have: when using the image widget, which allows us to link an image to a url, it would be lovely to have the option to have the new url open in a new window, so that the reader can also stay in our website/blog rather than be whisked away elsewhere. Just thought I’d mention it :-)

    @cookiemonster1958, the “open in new window/tab” option will be added to the image widget, but I can’t say exactly when at this point. The good new though it that it will.

    As an alternative, you could create your own image widget using a text widget and then include the “target_blank” bit to make it open in a new window. Here are some Text Widget and Text Widget Links support documents for your reference should you decide to go this route.

    Text Widget
    Text Widget Links
    Linking Images

    Hi sacred path, that’s great to know that the option will be added! Thanks for your suggestions…I did try to create a linked image via a text widget using the “target_blank” code but it totally refused to stick. Then I read up on the text widget in the support section and it suggested creating linked images and text in a “new post” text window, which I tried and it worked. Cannot understand why, but it did, so that’s good news! Thanks again for your help.

    Who knows with software. One way works and the other doesn’t. :)

    You are welcome and glad you got the text widget to work. Let us know if you have additional questions or problems.

    @cookiemonster1958, the obscured widget issue in the Customizer has been fixed.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks so much! It’s great to have it working properly ;-)

    You are welcome, and if you experience any other issues, please let us know. Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Thank you. I do have another question…maybe I should start a new thread, and if so, just say so. I’m wondering why my blavatar update is not taking…it’s been 24 hours since I updated it but it hasn’t changed. I did clear my Safari cache, but it hasn’t had any effect. Should I give it more time?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I just cleared my cache on Chrome and I’m seeing your target style blavatar, identical to the one in your dashboard at Settings > General. Sometimes it can be invisible proxy servers at your ISP that aren’t updating. Since I’m seeing it, it is working, but if you aren’t, give it another 24 hours. Sometimes it may take a couple times of clearing your cache and revisiting to see it.

  • Unknown's avatar

    You’re right. I also see it on Chrome and Firefox, so I hope it will only be a matter of time until I also see it on Safari! Tks.

  • Unknown's avatar

    It will show up eventually on older versions of Safari (before 8), but if or when you switch to Yosemite OS and Safari 8, the favicons will not be displayed. That was an Apple design decision it appears.

  • Unknown's avatar

    That is one more reason to be disappointed in Yosemite (and Apple), which I’ve avoided updating to as I’ve read so many negatives about it. I love Apple for its visual elements, but its priorities are obviously leaning towards compatibility with its other gizmos at the expense of its best-loved features. I’m glad you’ve let me know about this as otherwise I wouldn’t have understood why the favicon disappeared. Thanks again.
