CSS Editing: Are The Changes I want “Minor” Enough? Or Am I Shooting Too High?

After searching this forum and reading the 8 Things To Know sticky, I’d like your suggestions about possibly using the Edit CSS upgrade to change the appearance of my blog – Beer With A Construction Lawyer.

I have a really primitive ability to write HTML code – When posting in a forum I can code to make text bold or italic or insert an image via URL. I’ve gone to places like csstutorial.net, but it’s above my head. I don’t have much tome to devote to learning how to edit CSS code.

I selected the Contempt theme and would like to stick with it, with the changes identified below.

Changes I’d like to make:

• Add more space between the title and the subtitle in the Header.
• Widen the vertical margins so that there is less “grey space” on the right and left sides of the page.
• Add more tabs to the right of the “Home” at the top of the Body (e.g., About, Contact Us, Legal Disclaimer).
• Changing the right side sidebar to:
o Re-arrange the contents (i.e., archives, categories, links).
o Change the font in each of the sidebar headers (i.e., Archives, Categories).
o Add e-mail and an RSS feed icon widget.
o Remove widgets like Meta.
• Edit the footer to remove what is currently there and add things like:
o A copyright notice.
o A link to a static legal disclaimer page.

Questions:

• Am I just too far out of my league trying to do these things by myself?
• If you think I could do this myself, are these changes “minor” enough for using the CSS editing upgrade, or should I self host at WordPress.org?
• If CSS editing upgrade is feasible, how do I code the changes I’m looking for?
• I suspect its not feasible for responding posters to spoon feed code to me, so, alternatively, please suggest where with as little CSS editing ability as me should go to learn what I need to so I can code changes myself.

Thank you!!

I did’t do to well putting a hyperlink to my blog in, so here is a better try: http://beerwithaconstructionlawyer.wordpress.com/

first two you can do, the last two you can’t do and the stuff inbetween you dont even need CSS to do that.
the CSS upgrade is good enough where you achieve these minor changes no need to move over to wordpress.ORG, unless you really want to do the last two things on you list.
without a link to your blog can’t help you on how to achieve the changes
definitely right on the spoon feeding part, so I suggest looking through other CSS codes to learn how things are done or goto the suggest CSS sites recommended by wordpress.
HTH :)

nevermind my point about not providing a link to your blog, apparently I type really slow. Anyways, all you needed to do was put the link in to make it clickable you didn’t need the part

You need to unprotect your blog in order for us to see it.

Some of the things you mention do not require the CSS upgrade:
1. Add more tabs to the right of the “Home” at the top of the Body (e.g., About, Contact Us, Legal Disclaimer) – add these pages to your blog and the tabs will appear
2 • Changing the right side sidebar to:
o Re-arrange the contents (i.e., archives, categories, links) – look in the FAQ on how to drag and drop widgets
o Add e-mail and an RSS feed icon widget – again, look at the widgets FAQ
o Remove widgets like Meta – in the widgets FAQ

As for the footer – it is generally considered bad form to remove the theme author’s info but it can be done with CSS.

As to your remaining items – these are CSS changes. If you do not have any CSS experience and are unwilling to learn, you’re going to have a hard time changing them, regardless of whether you self-host or not. Bottom line is that there is no official support for CSS and only a few in the forums are well versed in it. That’s the reason there is a preview function – so that you can try before you buy. There are a number of CSS resources linked at the top of the CSS forum.

Hi!

New to wordpress…and glad to be blogging! Question: Can I change the Image in the header of my layout? I’m trying to figure out where to “post the image” so the page can “find it”.

Also, as a complete warning, I’m a total newbie. Please be kind. (aka: gentle)

Thanks,
Sye

Sye – as a newbie, let me suggest you start by reading the sticky, 8 Things, at the top of the forums. You’ll find a wealth of information in there.

As to your question – your theme allows for a custom header image without CSS. Please review your dashboard for more details.

Vivianpaige, thannk you for noticing that my blog was restricted! I changes the privacy on it. I forgot that I enabled the maximum privacty restriction before submitting the OP.

Vivianpaige, thanks for your other remarks too. I’ll create some new pages and dig deeper in to the FAQs as you suggest.

I did not realize that it’s bad form to remove the theme designer’s name from a page. But after going through some HTML and CSS tutorials today, I can see why it is. That stuff is really hard for the neophyte. Those designers deserve a lot of credit and mentioning their name at the bottom of the page is hardly enough.

I really appreciate the help and advice on WP etiquitte too.
