css editing not working

  • Unknown's avatar

    So… I am designing this website for a client, he already has the domain through godaddy, and a seperate wordpress account in which I mapped to the domain. But it wont let me edit my theme’s css. Any ideas?

    Yes the WordPress account is premium.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard and edit the CSS.

    I want to edit my actual theme’s CSS, not add onto the cascade. people are saying to me that I’m supposed to have an edit button under appearance in Admin, but I don’t.

    I am sorry but unless or until you read the support docs I linked to like Custom design – Frequently Asked Questions you will not recognize the limitations of CSS editing on any WordPress.COM hosted blog.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/#themes-original-css

    And, unless or until you are logged in correctly as I stated above you will not be able to gain access to do any CSS editing.

    I am logged in correctly as an admin. It is not letting me edit ANY of my theme’s CSS. All I want to do is edit some of the code that is already there, but i can’t edit or look at it at all.

    Exactly what kind of device are you using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com?

    Exactly which browser (and version of it) are you using? Check here if necessary http://supportdetails.com/

    Understand that from this end of things we deal with the actual owner of the blog ie. the person who registered it under their username account and associated email address and who purchased any upgrades for it. I think you may need to have that person log in under the appropriate username account and post here.

    This isn’t any help. I’m pretty sure if the client gives me access to the account to develop their website, i have the right to post an issue I am having with the editing process. I can’t find anyway to actually get into my themes CSS. So my question is, is the only way to edit my themes CSS is to add onto it? Or can i edit the actual CSS, That’s all i want to know…

    I apologize for not seeing this thread before. It looks like it got missed.

    The CSS editor in WordPress.com is located at Appearance > Customize > CSS in the blog’s dashboard (I’m sure you found this by now though).

    Regarding editing the theme CSS directly, that is not possible at WordPress.com. With a WordPress.org setup, you get full control but have to manage the software and maintenance, vet plugins, make sure backups are happening, and all of those kinds of things yourself. With WordPress.com, access to add plugins, add themes, and edit theme code, including editing the CSS files directly, are not options. The CSS editor at WordPress.com let’s you either extend the CSS by writing some rules to override the existing ones (this is most common) or there is an option below the CSS editor that will let you turn off the theme CSS completely and start from scratch. It’s possible to copy and paste the theme CSS into the editor at that point and then have full access to edit the CSS directly, but that is advanced. If you are an expert with CSS (and it sounds like you are), then that would be the way to go. It’s not highlighted prominently as an option in the UI because most beginners have a lot of trouble with the “start fresh” option and tend to mess up the CSS. The biggest gotcha is needing to make sure any url() references have the full URL (because copying them directly from the style.css file won’t work because they are relative paths and that won’t work when the CSS is moved).

    If you need any help or have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know. I will subscribe to this thread and watch for replies here.

    This page explains the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org in a bit more detail if you’re interested:

    What I mentioned about turning off the theme CSS completely is mentioned on our help page that explains how CSS editing works at WordPress.com. If you have any feedback on making that page more clear, I would love that. If not, no worries.

    Thank you this has helped, I just wanted to remove the footer text. I guess ill just have to hide them with css.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Actually, removing the footer credits is against the WordPress.com terms of service. Could you please keep the footer credits visible and readable? You can adjust their color to make them blend in better with your modified design, but they should still be clearly readable. I can help you with CSS to modify the colors if you need help with that. Just let me know.

    Hey, I’m new here and I’m having some problems with widgets, my website home page has 3 widgets at the bottom of the page, is it possible to change color for each one of them? if so how? I’ve already put this code in CSS styles .widget-wrapper {
    background-color: #008000;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    }

    @beginner87, the site linked to your username, https://beginner87.wordpress.com/, has no content. Is that the site you are talking about? If so, since you are using a different theme, and since CSS is generally theme specific, can I ask you to create a new thread in the CSS Forum? Many thanks in advance.
