CSS help needed with featured images
-
I just changed to the Antenna theme from Edin. The main url is https://livinthelifeinla.com/?iframe=true&theme_preview=true. When looking at this page, the featured images are sized such that text is cut off, but when you look at the actual post page they are correct. How can I fix how these are displayed?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Antenna automatically crops your featured images at 380px by 290px for the blog page and there isn’t a way around that with CSS.
If it’s not possible for you to replace each featured image, you could use custom CSS to hide them from the blog page:
.blog .post-thumbnail { display: none; }Visitors to your site would then only see the full image after clicking through to a full post.
Let me know if that alternative works for you.

Well hiding the images totally defeats the purpose…is there another template or theme I should consider which retains the features I have now but doesn’t mess up the images?
Also, I have a few other questions that have arisen:
1) is it possible to move the social menu to the top of the page for visibility? If not, can you add a second one?
2) is it possible to have the social icons larger and in color like they are on the wordpress site?
3) Is there the ability to add a button at the bottom of a page that will take the reader back to the top of the page?

Hi there,
1) is it possible to move the social menu to the top of the page for visibility? If not, can you add a second one?
This would be very challenging to do it and get it to work correctly on all screens/window sizes since the HTML div that the social icons are in is a top-level child of the main overall container div. It would be very difficult to contain and keep positioned correctly on all screens. You could add menu items to your main navigation and use image icons, or we could use the icons for Antenna.
2) is it possible to have the social icons larger and in color like they are on the wordpress site?
I’m not seeing any social menu on your site right now. Did you deactivate it?
3) Is there the ability to add a button at the bottom of a page that will take the reader back to the top of the page?
What we have available to us is the Page Jump, which requires an anchor and then the link to that anchor. You could put the anchor in a text widget at the top of your sidebar and then put the link to that anchor in a text widget in your footer widget area. When clicked, it would not take someone all the way to the top of the page on desktop systems, but only to the top of the sidebar. On smaller tablets and phones, since the sidebar moved down below the content on narrower screens, it would take them only to the top of that sidebar below the content.
Generally on modern themes, the “back to top” is done with Javascript and we cannot use that at WordPress.com.

The social menu is on the page but your question really points out the problem because it’s so tiny it’s very easy to miss. Also it is black so it just melts right into the text.

Hi, on https://livinthelifeinla.com/ looking at Customize > Theme Options, I’m not seeing that you have added your social services links. If I add URLs there, they show up in color at the bottom of your site. Add your social services links there and then save and publish and they will show up at the bottom of your site in the footer.

I am looking at the site right now and I see the three icons without doing anything further. I’m using right now my desktop machine. I see the three icons in the menu on the right and if I click on the one for Twitter it does take me to my Twitter profile page .

OK I have gone back in and re-added my social links on the customize theme options screen. When I check on my desktop machine, I still see the three little black icon on the right nav bar, and at the very bottom of the page I do see the three colored social icons, but they are so far down it takes forever to find them. On my Mobile devices, I see the icons twice. The first time they are small and in black text immediately below the post, and the second time all the way at the very bottom I see them larger and in color but I have to scroll through a lot of stuff to get to them.

I have thought about this a bit further and think I have come up with a solution. I currently have an Image Widget that I use for Bloglovin’. Is there any reason that I cannot have multiple Image Widgets? Also, I think I know why there are now two sets of social media links. The sidebar widget that I had for social media carried over from my old theme which did not offer the colorful ones that are now at the bottom of the screen. If I can add more Image widgets then I can get rid of the sidebar widget. Let me know of any holes you can poke into this idea…thanks again for all of your help!

Here is a new question regarding “Featured Content” that I don’t see an answer to. I just turned on the Featured Content option in my theme (Antenna). I understand that I can have up to 10 of these. Do I have the ability to determine the rotation sequence of these, i.e. what is first, second, third, etc.?

Ah, do I feel silly. I didn’t look in the sidebar, I was looking at the bottom where the theme puts the social menu. Sorry about that. Add the following to your custom CSS, which substantially recreates the styling of the social icons on the bottom of the demo site.
.widget_wpcom_social_media_icons_widget .genericon { font-size: 22px; padding: 15px; color: #fff !important; border-radius: 2px; } .genericon-twitter { background-color: #77cbf0; } .genericon-instagram { background-color: #316698; } .genericon-pinterest { background-color: #ed5554; } -
You can have multiple instances of image widgets. See what you think with the above solution for your social icons in the sidebar.
On the featured content rotation, it defaults to the date order of the posts with the newest being show first and then the next oldest and so on. The only way to change that would be to edit the published dates and put them in the order you want them. If you open them in the new editor and click on the “published…” link above preview/update, it will open and you can click on the date and change the date and/or time the post was published.
