css help, please! Instructions for pasting css code, where and how

  • Unknown's avatar

I *just* upgraded to css capabilities and I have absolutely *no* idea how to add a css code into my page. if you have tips or “walk-me-through-it-like-a-dummy” instructions, it’d be much appreciated as well!

I already tried the basic info page on this topic.

I also tried adding the css code (provided by the theme creator on the other forum) on the customization>css thing, editing the “text” code of the exact page I want changed, and many other attempts, failed.

    any help would be awesome!!!

Well, when you ask for help with CSS you need to be more specific. There are learning resources pinned to the top of the CSS forums. You can go through those and if you still don’t know how to make the specific changes you want, you post here again. An example of a good CSS request would be:

I’m using the X theme and I want to replace my blank grey header with this picture of dancing girls in Rio which is the correct dimensions, and also move my right sidebar and turn it into a footer instead. What code would I need to make these two changes?

I have the code I need, I just don’t know where to put it, what to do with it, how to preview and save, etc.

Where do I paste my code?

CSS for a WP.org version of the theme will not necessarily work for a WP.com version of the theme, but if you want to give it a shot, go to the Customizer on your dashboard under Appearance and you will find the CSS editor there.

I have found that css editor in the customization tool bar on the right side…I just can’t get *any* css code to do anything there. I have tried so many different ones that even have been said on the forum to work for others with the same theme as me (port).

For example, I have the following css hopes:

    1. Make the existing menu bar that has my png logo on it already also carry links to a couple other pages?

    2. I thought the testimonials would be randomized but it’s always the same most recent three, is there a setting to change or css to make them randomized u pin refreshing the page or for every visit to my homepage?

    3. Is there a way to get the Testimonials that I have created on a page of their own even without a live link from the original title, per my original request?

    4. I suppose I will have to create a sub-domain for my blog, is there any possibility of making the existing title a live link to go to my new sub-domain when I create it?

    5. I read another forum that had a replied css code to create a gallery slider similar to the .org version http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/topic/photo-gallery-3?replies=8

I would love one just like this but with larger display

I also would love to have a video play upon intro in place of my current banner image, similar to “jasminestar.com”

Any chance you can help in any of these?

  • Hi there,

I see these questions were answered by the theme authors in the Port support forum.

To clarify, you can use CSS to modify the appearance of a theme — change the color or size of an element, move an element, hide an element, etc. You can do quite a lot with CSS.

You cannot use CSS to modify a theme’s functionality, however — that requires editing the code in the theme files, which isn’t possible at WordPress.com.

If you want to be able to dig into the code of your theme, you might be interested in a self-hosted WordPress site. You can read more about the differences here:
    http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/11/14/com-or-org/

Let me know if you have further questions!
