CSS Help: Site Redesign

First, I am not too skilled with CSS but have Dreamweaver MX.

I am not sure of how to approach this, but I’d like to get my hand on a template and modify it to fit my needs. I liked the Contempt template but needed to change the look on some parts. I am currently using Cutline, as it is the more easily read.

I know Sandbox is an open theme; however can I do the modification work in my copy of Dreamweaver? As it is a WYSIWYG editor, it would be a whole lot easier than doing it by codeview. What about templates not offered on WordPress.com?

    Here is what I want:
3 columns (2 columns is minimal)
Need to modify background and leave “content” area white.
I liked the shadow look in Contempt There is a black line on the edge of the whit area.
Make the Left or Right column, a different color than the main area.
Like the menu used in both Contempt and Cutline.
Main reason for Cutline – heavier and more readable fonts

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can’t use Dreamweaver at all on a WordPress.COM blog, Sandbox or no Sandbox. CSS editing here has some serious restrictions, and people are advised NOT to purchase the CSS upgrade if they don’t already know how to work with CSS fluently.

You can use the free Preview feature to test your CSS changes and when you’re good enough to make whatever changes you want, then make the purchase and apply the changes.

You cannot add external themes to a WordPress.com blog either.

    Alright,

I just took a look at both Benevolence and Contempt. I think I see where my problem is.

I have a beautiful photo that is seated prominently at the top. Can someone please point me to a theme that works best with the photo I’m using for my custom header. I’m perfectly willing to mod the photo to include the site name.

The second item I am needing is a theme with a nice dark blue background Benevolence appears black. The reason is, I’m trying to coordinate the background color with the photo.

I’d also like for the font to be more readable. This is why I picked Cutline. Otherwise, I’d go with Benevolence.

As for the sidebar, the only reason for a different color is to offset it from the content area.

Yes, I liked the menu bar in Contempt and Cutline. I am trying to make things easier for site visitors who are NOT bloggers.

The 3 column layout isn’t a requirement; rather it is to allow for future growth. I”m fine with 2 column.

Any recommendations? Thanks for the helps.

With the CSS upgrade, you can of course change things like background colour, etc. But there is no official support for it, which means if you don’t already know how to do the most basic things on it, it’s unlikely that anyone will find the answers for you.

Read the references listed at the top of the CSS forum. Then you could make those changes.

It seems that my next response is something that belongs in the “Ideas” forum.

It would be cool, if WordPress.COM had a feature to enable users to make simple changes to a them without having to know CSS. This is the one thing I liked about Blogger. Otherwise, I prefer wordpress.
