Hi kroesbox,
If you purchase the Custom Design upgrade you can cancel it at any time. If you do you will lose any of the customization you’ve done though.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/You can also at any time go into your Dashboard to Store then My Upgrades. One of the options under there should be to Disable the Auto Renew.
That way if you no longer want it you can still keep it active for the year you’ve paid.
Hope that helps.

Hey thankyou for responding
I’ve noticed this
What happens if I unsubscribe from my Custom Design upgrade?
All upgrades on WordPress.com are renewed yearly. Should you choose to cancel your subscription, your custom fonts, colors, and CSS will no longer be applied to your blog. The revisions for your customizations will still be saved, but they won’t be visible on the blog’s front end unless you renew your subscription.
So basically you’ll be stuck to the subscription in order to maintain the changes?

That’s right. If you want to keep the changes you’ve made to the site you’ll need to continue to renew the Custom Design upgrade.
Not sure of your experience but I’ve been around the web for quite a while now and I’ve used many other hosts. When it comes to reliability, ease of use and storage space alone I’d gladly pay the $30/year.
