CSS theme HELP
-
I bought the CSS editor and have been doing okay with it, but I want to try something new. I have no idea what I am doing and I hate it because I am usually pretty good with these things. Does anyone have the time to help me out? I downloaded a theme from alexking.org and I need help putting it in. I am suppose to upload the files to WP… where? The only upload I found was on my write a new post page and it wouldn’t let me upload the file. Someone please help, I really like this theme and I want to use it. Here is a link to the theme I am trying to use. Click here Thank you for at least reading this! And advance thanks for any help.

Hmm, I could have sworn that I wrote a response to this but long story short, Alex King is presenting those themes for users of regular wordpress from wordpress.org, not the hosted multiuser version we run here.
YOu may want to take a few moments and read the FAQ posted at the head of these forums as this is covered in there.
You may be able to convert the style.css file into something that would work with the sandbox theme though.
Hope this helps,

The real issue with the CSS here is that you need to change the items in your CSS sheet to match the same names as those that wordpress.com uses for themes. The CSS sheet you take off of Alex King might be a little different calls than wordpress.com. For instance, that sheet might call a div called wrapper and wordpress might need you to call it wrap. Those are the subtle differences.
In terms of uploading files, maybe check the upgrade section to see that you can upload all filetypes needed from the post and page creation pages. If not, you can always check out the sites with free upload space and then reference the files that you are using from your CSS to the URL’s from that space.
I am still fighting a bit with the same issues myself. The easy way for me, is view the source of each page and compare your CSS sheet to the one that controls it to find out what you need to call in the sheet.
As well, for reference there is a great FAQ on this issue
Happy CSS’ing!

Thank you so much. I am not sure I’ll be able to invest that much time, I have a baby and my husband is in the military and is not going to back for a while. Maybe I’ll get a chance to figure it out.

Regular WordPress -> AlexKing’s page and themes.wordpress.net
For use here at wp.com -> Dashboard -> Presentations. We’re not allowed to install our own themes due to security concerns.Didn’t we just have a thread on Jorunal Blue, by the way?

Other than images for your stylesheet you shouldn’t need to upload anything else. CSS sheets would define the images for the sheet in them and the rest is just styling with placement and colors. The CSS upgrade has the sheet uploaded already for you, so having space for the images would be the thing you need I would imagine. WordPress.com’s original 50megs of upload space can have images and so can the upgrade space.
Themes for wordpress.com (simple look and click themes) are upgraded by staff for use of all people. The CSS upgrade allows you to change one of those themes to look like another theme on the net (wordpress or not). It just is a juggling act to get the sheets to call the templates of wordpress (that we cannot edit) by using the correct calls. The images can be uploaded to your space, so it really comes down to how well you can co-ordinate the sheet (CSS that is).
At least, after saying all this, you don’t have to edit it on your live site! The preview of the CSS changes in the admin is a great tool! It previews what you site would look like if you save the CSS sheet you are editing without making it go live! That is a life saver!
The CSS upgrade takes some work and knowledge and is recommended to those that feel comfortable changing around code in that sheet. I don’t think anyone has really put up a massive tutorial on editing CSS sheets for wordpress.com, but maybe searching for it in the forums and google might bring up something that I have missed!

hey sorry for taking so long to reply. I had a play date. When I do use this template, should I make sandbox my main theme? Or should it work on any?
-
When you customize your CSS, you can start with whatever sheet you want. Most people recommend using the Sandbox as it the most basic theme to start playing with. Really, I don’t think it will matter too much, but I am not 100% sure. As long as you start with one and edit the CSS to your needs, that should be the way it would work for you.

CSS customization can be used to improve on any existing theme; you can define your own classes for use in posts; you can select the Sandbox theme and build on one of the Minimalist layouts or, opt for no stylesheet and do it all yourself. If you feel you are up to the challenge of customizing a theme then these link, link, link will be helpful.
Css customization is not recommended for those without previous experience. Although there is a forum and other bloggers may volunteer to help you if needs be, there is no staff support for learning and experimenting with css customization. There are css resources that you can access listed in the FAQs blog.
The 15$ you pay to upgrade a wordpress.com blog enables you to to alter the appearance of your theme and but not the underlying php code. Purchasing the upgrade entitles you to customize css on one blog for one year.
And if you are new to wordpress.com then this link will be useful to you because it contains links to the basic resources we use here.
