Cubic theme homepage images and Comments icon

I recently switched to the Cubic theme and while I find it very appealing aesthetically, I’m still struggling with how the theme chooses which image will be THE cube image for the homepage.

For example, today’s post, Location Location Location
    http://earthoceanskyredux.com/2015/07/25/location-location-location/
the theme took the SECOND photo of the story and placed in the Home Cube. When I previewed the post before publishing, it gave me no indication that my first photo in the post would not be chosen. Since I tell stories with sequential photos, I don’t like that the theme seems to capture a photo in the post at whim for the cube. I want full control over that decision. I wanted the first photo in the Location post to set in the cube.

I had a similar problem with the post called Just Add Salt.

The theme took the very LAST photo I added and made it the default for the cube.

How do I override this and to have control over the photo in the cube homepage?

Secondly, a suggestion. I’d love the theme to have a Comment icon on the homepage Cube, in each post, before opening the post itself. Tucked in the upper right or left corner. It’s a pain to have to open up the post to see if more people have commented.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Could you explicitly set the featured images for your posts using the information in this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/

On almost all the themes, comments are displayed on individual posts, not on the blog home page. So unless you use a theme like P2, this behavior can’t be changed.

Thank you for the suggestion of the featured image. I will give it a try this week.

I was sure there was no way of adding a comments icon on the homepage but I’d still like one. I get a lot of repeat readers to the same post, who come back to add another comment. Let’s say they’ve read the post and only want to see more of the comment conversation – with a comment icon (a small discrete one), the return reader could just click the comments icon to get back in.

  • Comments are not shown on homepage because if a post gets lots of comments, it make it difficult for your visitors to find the next post. There is no way around it on WordPress.com.

You can however allow your visitors to follow comments by enabling “Follow comments” on your site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/following-comments/

I misspoke about asking for the comments icon to be on the homepage. What I’d really like is the option, per post even, to put a comments icon in each cube. You’ll see a screen shot of my home page where I’ve drawn circles on each post as how I see the option for adding a comments icon. Inside the circle would be the number of comments.

    I personally think it’s a great idea.

  • That is also not possible with Cubic theme on WordPress.com, unfortunately.
