Cubic/Boardwalk Theme CSS performance problem

  • Unknown's avatar

At the post level the CSS on Cubic/Boardwalk is very slow to load. a friend (who knows his onions) has pointed out that the issue is as follows: the blank page problem is caused by the stylesheet with the id “all-css-8” – it is setting an opacity of 0 on the class “site” – not sure why, but if you remove that particular style, it works ok. This is inherited from Boardwalk.

This may be the issue here too: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/blog-loads-extremely-slow?replies=7#post-2384333

My question is, can I edit the theme on my .com site (not premium) or do I need to wait for a fix from Automattic? And if the latter how ought I request a fix?

I may also port the blog to a .org instance I’m running and try and edit there (new to WP theme editing though, so yak shaving and much breaking of internets is likely)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Could you please give me an example of a post that you find it loading very slowly so I can take a look?

“the blank page problem” – what do you mean by this, could you explain more in detail? Can you provide a link to a blank page that I can look at?

Theme files can’t be edited. Once we get to the bottom of the problem we’ll see what can be done and take it from there. Thanks!

    Hi Kathryn,

Sure, I’ve reactivated Cubic (I had switched back to twenty fifteen as I couldn’t find a fix). It’s a completely vanilla cubic installation.

    The page is here: https://meeware.wordpress.com/2015/05/18/collaboration-workshop-reflections/

I’m finding it really really slow on any browser actually. Can you let me know when you’ve been able to take a look please, as I’d really like to revert back to twenty fifteen as soon as I can so people can see my site!

    Thanks

    Ant

  • Thanks a lot! One thing I noticed right away is that your logo file is nearly half a meg. Could you try resizing it in a graphics program so it’s a smaller-sized file, re-upload it, and let me know if that makes a difference in the load time?

Did you also have any more detail about this:

Do you find single posts slow on the demo site too?

    Hi,

Yes the “blank page problem” is that page linked to above sitting there blank for ages. Slow loading, or hanging, in other words.

Thanks for the logo tip- hadn’t spotted that.

And no, demo site doesn’t have the problem.

Oh and one other point worth mentioning is that when I swapped out cubic for twenty fifteen, the page was fast to load.

When I dug through the css the styles.css file section 18 Pace seemed to be where the problem code sat.

I am aware this is the worst bug report ever. Sorry. I shall do better in future.

Note also the same post on the same theme on my self hosted wp site seems fine…. http://beerthimbles.com/2015/05/18/collaboration-workshop-reflections/

Yup now I am v confused.

  • Thanks a lot for the additional info! I’m seeing the blank-page effect now on your site and we’re investigating what’s going on. I’ll keep you posted here!

Cheers, thanks for your patience. It’s a weird one isn’t it! I think that user mariejaster raised a very similar issue (and she too had a silly big logo file!)

  • After some investigation, we’ve changed your sharing-button style from the “official” style to “icon only” and it seems to have helped with the loading, could you let us know if it’s better for you as well?

  • Hi there,
We have now fixed the issue regarding the “official” buttons vs loading time.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.
