Currency in EUR, existing login email causing issues transferring site
-
I have a WordPress site hosted by Ionos / 1and1 and I would like to transition it to an annual subscription hosted by WordPress.com. There are three issues:
1. When I click the referral link I was sent, my currency is stuck as EUR instead of USD
2. My WordPress login is already in use managing my 1and1 website’s login to the WordPress mobile app, which seems like it might create a problem for transferring my site contents, since it’s the same site (listed under Linked Blogs).
3. I have tried this several times, so it looks like I have at least 2 x.wordpress.com blogs with similar names. Thanks in advance for your help
WP.com: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
When I click the referral link I was sent, my currency is stuck as EUR instead of USD
I’ve changed your account currency to USD.
My WordPress login is already in use managing my 1and1 website’s login to the WordPress mobile app, which seems like it might create a problem for transferring my site contents, since it’s the same site (listed under Linked Blogs).
Regarding the login credentials, please note that your self-hosted WordPress.org site has a different set of username and password. That site is connected to your WordPress.com account via Jetpack, so you can access that site from your WordPress.com dashboard/app. But you also have a separate set of credentials you can use to log into your site directly at https://hopstrains.com/wp-login.php. May I know if you have access to the site’s dashboard there?
I have tried this several times, so it looks like I have at least 2 x.wordpress.com blogs with similar names.
You do have three WordPress.com sites with similar names. They are:
- https://hopstrains.wordpress.com/
To avoid confusion, I’d suggest keeping only the one you want and deleting the others.
As for transferring the content, are you looking to migrate your self-hosted WordPress.org site to WordPress.com? If yes, you can follow this guide for importing an entire WordPress site:
If you have a website built with WordPress on another hosting provider, generally referred to as a self-hosted WordPress.org site, and want to move it to WordPress.com, use our Import Everything option. The Import Everything option will copy your existing self-hosted WordPress site to your new WordPress.com site, including your content, media, plugins, and the theme. PrerequisitesImport fYou’ll want to upgrade your WordPress.com site to a paid plan. You’ll see the pricing in USD now. If you’d like to keep the plugins and theme you currently have on your self-hosted site, you will want the WordPress.com Business plan, which supports plugins and third-party themes. It also comes with automated backups with one-click restores, malware and security scanning, and more.
Feel free to let us know if there’s anything else you need and we’ll be happy to help.

Thank you, this is exactly the information I have been looking for. I am going to attempt to transfer my blog to WordPress Basic as I don’t really need the third-party themes.

Hi there!
Sounds good! You can get started with the WordPress.com Personal plan here:
If you need them, we have a ton of resources for using WordPress.com here: https://wordpress.com/learn

I have been able to transfer my blog and it appears that all posts and media have also transferred over. I was also able to delete the empty blogs, though I wasn’t able to reuse the deleted blogs’ names.
My issue now is that I would like to transfer over my website statistics and subscribers. Is this possible in WordPress Basic?
-
Hi there,
Yes that is no problem. I have moved your stats and you can see your new WordPress.com https://wordpress.com/stats/day/hopstrainsnyc.wordpress.com
You can also confirm that the subscribers have also been moved over here: https://wordpress.com/people/subscribers/hopstrainsnyc.wordpress.com
I can also confirm that it looks like all content has been moved over successfully, and at this point you should no longer need access to the IONOS site. With that in mind you can start your domain migration at any time. For the smoothest possible transfer I recommend first adding our domain name server (NS) addresses to the domain settings in IONOS, and you can ask their support team to help you add them:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COMThose settings will allow the domain to connect to WordPress.com while it’s still with the current provider. Once you add the settings it will be a few hours until they “take effect” but after that you should see your WordPress.com site when you visit hopstrains.com
At that point you can initiate the transfer and when the domain is finally added to the account here you will have all the necessary settings in place and there will be nothing else you need to do. :)
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
-
I was able to find the custom name server option on IONOS, but it gave me this error:
Please note that your IONOS DNS zone settings are no longer used with custom name servers.
Before you switch, the necessary DNS entries must be made with the respective provider or external name server.Am I able to start the transfer process regardless and have my blog appear at my URL in a few hours?
-
Nothing to worry about here. This is a fairly standard warning that is their way of saying “you’re pointing your domain away from our hosting, are you sure?”
Yes, you’re sure. :)
This will not affect the transfer so you can proceed with that anytime after you make that settings change. Also once you update your settings at IONOS. please reply to the thread here, and then we can change the setting on this end so that your site will be ready to display at the non-wordpress.com address.
Thanks!
-
IONOS gave me first an error: “The host name is not valid. Please check your input.”
I then changed all the server names to lowercase and it gave me just “Error” at the top of the page.
I have started the domain transfer on wordpress.com and it currently says: “Your transfer has been started and is waiting for authorization from your current domain provider. This process can take up to 7 days. If you need to cancel or expedite the transfer please contact them for assistance.”
-
I can definitely confirm the settings I gave are correct (they have not changed in all the years Totoro has worked here) but it seems their system is still giving some pushback. If you are not able to save the changes or concerned it may cause issues if you do, it’s fine to skip this for now.
From what I can see you have started the transfer here, and there is nothing else to do, the process is automated at this point: https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/hopstrains.com/transfer/in/hopstrainsnyc.wordpress.com
Typically it takes a registrar a day or two to “release” the domain, then about 24 hours to transfer to your account here. You can speed this up by contacting IONOS and asking them to expedite things from their end, but if you do nothing that is fine, your domain will be here soon enough.
Hope that helps!

I successfully transferred my domain to WordPress. I have two notices on the right sidebar:
Domain requires updating – Fix
Redirects to hopstrainsnyc.wordpress.com
Are these an issue?
I also seem to have an issue with two of my recent posts:
Using the Rollei Prego 90 for the first and last time
Rediscovering film cameras in Princeton
Both of these posts show a blank page in Firefox, even though I can see their entries at https://wordpress.com/posts/hopstrains.com.

I have fixed this issue quoted below by saving the image galleries in the posts as thumbnails, though my question about “Domain requires updating” and redirecting is still open. Thanks.
I also seem to have an issue with two of my recent posts:

Hi there!
I can confirm that the domain transfer was successful, and your site, including those two posts you mentioned, is loading fine on my end.
I think what’s happening is something called DNS propagation. Because your domain transfer was recent, and the nameservers were updated to WordPress.com ones earlier today, the change can take up to 72 hours to take effect. During this time, it’s normal for the domain to fail to load all the time. You will notice it most because you visited the domain before (when it was pointed to a different server).
Within 72 hours, which is the DNS propagation period, this will resolve by itself. I can already see those two posts load fine with the domain. You can try clearing your browser cache or use a different browser in the meantime. You can also try using a different internet connection if possible. But if not, all you need to do is wait and give it some time.
Hope that helps!
-
Thank you, it looks like things are resolving on their own since last night — It appears that there are now two entries on my WP sites panel named “hopstrains.com”.
One is the WordPress account I made before I transferred the domain, yesterday this was named hopstrainsnyc.wordpress.com, and the other is related to the domain transfer. Its admin page has features of my old self-hosted page. Is there something I can do to essentially merge these? -
Hi again,
I’m assuming that you have not closed down your hosting (and site ) with your other provider yet, yes? Even though the domain is moved we can still “see” that other site, and still use the old address. It can get confusing.
On this end I have removed the connection so you do not see it. This does not shut down your other site though. You will want to be sure that you cancel your billing with them so you do not get any surprise hosting renewal fee.
Thanks for rocking WordPress.com! :)
-
Excellent. Thank you. That means I have reached the final step – I didn’t want to close the old account until I was sure the transfer was successful. You have been a big help.
-
Glad to help. I can also confirm (since I know it can be panic-inducing) that it is safe to spin down your previous site. All content appears to have been imported on this end and I compared the sites when they were both visible.
I do not see any reason you will need the previous site going forward. o/
-
I hope this will be my last question :)
Now that I only have my wordpress.com account, on my admin page it says:
Hops Trains and Backpacks
hopstrainsnyc.wordpress.com
(Redirect)
Redirects to hopstrains.comIs there any way to just have the main blog address be hopstrains.com without there being a redirect in place? I think this is an option I may have accidentally set when I set up my domain settings.
-
Hi there!
All WordPress.com sites have a WordPress.com address. So it’s not possible to remove it. When you register a custom domain and set it as the primary address of your site (which is possible with a WordPress.com plan), the WordPress.com address automatically redirects to the custom domain you registered. All this is working exactly how it’s supposed to work. :)
Hope that helps!
