Current Odeo podasting issues
-
It seems no matter WHAT I do, I can’t get the Odeo player to work. I”m wondering if it’s something wrong with me, because I’m using different computers now (no inet at home) and can’t check while I’m building the podcast to ensure that they work. Or have other people experienced Odeo problems recently as well?
I can upload audio if it’s an mp3 from the web, but can’t seem to upload anything from a hard drive at all. Once uploaded, I can go to the audio page and select “Place in a podcast” but if I go to that podcast’s page, it says there’s no audio. If I go to Add Audio, it says there’s no audio that’s not already in a podcast. Catch-22. If I try to post the podcast here, it can’t play, regardless of whether I can play the individual audio files on Odeo or not.
Help?

You’re not the only one having problems with Odeo.
For one thing, Odeo has stopped letting new users upload audio, so most people will need another server anyway.
As it is, it seems to work intermittently.
I’ve had success in IE and Firefox linking to non-podcast Saved Audio and to podcast files. I tried to test it between the two browsers across podcast and non-podcast, but I’ve simply run out of patience, as the server times out so often. (No, it’s not the final destination servers, which are working perfectly).
Alexa rates Odeo as slow, with 68% of sites faster: http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?q=odeo&url=http://odeo.com/. Not good for a media server that’s the only option for a system boasting over half a million bloggers. Average load time is reported at 3.2 seconds, but I currently have an Odeo tab loading in Firefox for over 10 minutes. Tellingly, a clip tested successfully in WordPress one day will fail another day, without anything having been changed either in the post or in Odeo.
I can appreciate the need not to get involved in support for a separate web system, but if WordPress is serious about people including audio in the web-based version, then this needs to be sorted. -
I thought we had a second service to use now? Gotta admit that I didn’t think much of Odeo myself. When I tried to find files on it, since we’re not allowed to upload stuff, I just ran into spammer after spammer using the names of the files that I wanted to use as traps.
Not a very well run service. :(

I got some of my Odeo problems sorted (you don’t use the URL of the podcast, you don’t use the URL of the audio, you use the URL of the audio IN the podcast, which means you can only really use one audio file per podcast, which means knitting files together offline and uploading them as one, which is a huge PIA and not at all what their site tells you) but not others (putting audio in a podcast, the podcast says it still has no audio).
I liked the slickness of Odeo at the beginning, but if it’s not going to function, fugyedaboudid. I’ll give the other one a shot next time I want audio.

Looked at Sonific, but it seems it only lets you post music that’s already up there. I’m looking to provide voice clips in posts.
-
Yes, and if it doesn’t have anything with Trent Reznor in it, I won’t be using it much. The selection seems small.
-
I just took a look at Sonific as well. My mistake. I thought it was like Odeo.
I’m trying, guys! :)

Just checked again, and each and every one is working fine now (using non-podcast files).
It seems this is a server performance issue for Odeo.
I wonder if the solution isn’t to allow people to choose whether they want to upload images or audio to WordPress. Maybe increasing the space just a little?
Or finding a flash player that can play files from the user’s own server space without having to go through a third party. -
I just have found that the FAQ http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/01/using-odeo/ does not work within Internet Explorer browser. The player shows “Loading File” and does not ends.
The thing is it works properly with the Firefox browser… Any ideas about how to overcome this problem?

Yes, it works with IE. I’m using IE6 and I’ve gotten it to work. What file URL are you having problems with?
-
The file I got the problem with it’s the FAQ example file…
I only get a “Loading file…” message… After I push the play button I get “Invalid File” and after that “Timeout”.
Maybe I must set something in the IE7 browser…
It’s pretty weird that the FAQ example does’nt work… :(
Thank you for your time.

I just remember that the flash macromedia plugin is not installed for the IE 7 browser. I’ve just installed and it’s working fine know.
Thank you.
