Current site is on WordPress, want to build new site and use current domain…..

    Hi, I have a client with a WordPress Site that is a total mess. I’d like to start fresh and build the site with a different template. Is there a way to do this and then attach the new site to the old domain? Alternatively is it possible to change the templates on the site but not make it public while I am working on it? Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Hi there,

    What is the URL of the current site?

    What you want is possible, but the how would depend on whether the site is hosted here on WordPress.com, or using the open source WordPress software at another hosting provider.

    If the site is hosted on WordPress.com, then as long as both sites are created under the same WordPress.com username account, you can simply switch the domain from the one site to the other when ready.

    If the site is hosted somewhere else, you’ll need to contact that hosting provider directly for help. It will also depend on whether you create the new site at the same host, or at another hosting provider.

    Thank you for that info! It sounds like you are saying it would be simple enough to build a new website on WordPress and then attach it to the domain name.
    In that case, when you set up the site to build, do you just attach a random name to it?

    It’s kind of a mess and it just seems better to start fresh then make edits.

    Thanks for that site URL. That site is not hosted here at WordPress.com, but hosted at Bluehost using the WordPress software.

    However, you certainly can get your new site set up here before switching your domain over!

    When you sign up for a new site, we give you a free subdomain (*.wordpress.com) that you can use to start building your new site.
