Current hosting company simply walked away with no notice. I want to host elsewhere but first i need to get help to backup my current WP site before anything is lost! There is NO support or even contact for that company. I do have the user ID for admin and also the password for the /wp-admin site. I have never done this so i need HELP ASAP!!
    Thanks

If your old site is still online, you can move the content to wordpress.com, https://wordpress.com/support/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/.
If your site is no longer online, there is nothing we can do.

    Thanks for your response.

I am not anywhere near an expert on this but i am somewhat capable.
I am not sure of all of the references and terms used. but below i have a bunch of info and questions please

    1. My site is currently online on the internet (not sure for how much longer)
    2. i previously spoke to Godaddy (host before i moved to the failed company) to take over hosting.
    3. They were EXTREMLY HELPFUL in explaining all of the steps necessary.
    4. However, with WP there is no current ability for me to speak with anyone other than this forum.
    5. i have a .COM URL which ends in /WP-Admin.
    6. i have the Admin user ID and password.
    7. This data and site displays fine (currently)
    8. i was advised by Godaddy to contact WordPress and ask for support and advise the company was shut down. To ask for assistance in getting a backup made up of all the data under the url…./WP-Admin
    9. I did read the response under the URL you sent.
    10. Are you indicating (sorry for the lack of knowledge) that the current site is hosted itself on this defuncts companies site (thus called self hosted) and that i can move it to wordpress’s own wordpress.com URL ?
    11. Is that what Godaddy is referring to as backing up the site to wordpress?
    12. If yes, then when that is done if i still desire to migrate to Godaddy hosting I can by one again migrating from wordpress.com to Godaddy.com ?
    13. It appears i need to create an account with wordpress as i do not know what account name was used by defunct hosting company. If Yes, do i have to select some sort of plan and how long of a plan and or cost?
our business has survived the pandemic barely, but the lose of this WP site and its attached woo commerce processing is endangering the survival of our small business.
    Please advise
    Thanks

  • Hi Brian! Solid information and questions here.

It sounds like time is of the essence.

A key piece of information missing is the URL of your site. Feel free to provide that if you can.

You’re quite close in your questions and lingo! I’ve put the main items below and paraphrased them a bit to simplify the reading.

    10. Are you indicating that the current site is hosted itself on this defuncts companies site and that i can move it to wordpress’s own wordpress.com URL ?

That’s close. Your current website is hosted on (living on) the defunct company’s servers.

    A couple of options:

    1. You can move it to GoDaddy.
    -or-
    2. You can move it to our hosting services here at WordPress.com.

(In reality there are many hosting options, but since you are here I will shorten it to GoDaddy and ourselves)

We are two different companies. We both can host WordPress websites, but you will need to pick one. I see above your current preference is GoDaddy. Nothing wrong with that. You’re here and we’ll try to guide you as best we can as WordPress experts.

    11. Is that what Godaddy is referring to as backing up the site to wordpress?

I’m not able to speak on GoDaddy’s behalf. If you are not sure what they are referring to, I recommend speaking with them again and ask them to really break this down into more easy-to-understand terms. This will be a very important step.

    12. if i still desire to migrate to Godaddy hosting I can by one again migrating from wordpress.com to Godaddy.com ?

You can, but, again, I’ll say that it’s best to pick the host you prefer in the first step (my answer to question 10). If that is GoDaddy, I would start there, have their support clarify the backup and migration process and help you get your site onto their servers.

If for any reason you decide you would rather move your site here to our servers here at WordPress.com, let us know and we can switch gears and work with you on what I mentioned above.

    13. It appears i need to create an account with wordpress[.com]

That would only be necessary for now if you decided you would rather host your WordPress site on our servers here at WordPress.com.

I’m going to stop here. Take your time reading this, and let us know if you have any questions about the information I’ve provided.

    Thanks Dean
That was very helpful. Unfortunately by the time you were able to respond i received help from Godaddy and since i had the user id and PW for admin from the defunct company and the site was still up. i migrated to Godaddy as then had a “Manual migrate from WP to GD” I probably would have went with WP hosting but i was desperate to get stuff migrated before those servers went down due to lack of electric payment or something !

    Thanks again
    Brian
