Custom Background and Header links in admin panel redirect to Customize page

@ rachelmcr,
If you ever tried the Custom Design preview mode on a particular blog without exiting it afterwards, it will remain active in the customizer until you decide to exit that preview mode.
That may be the explanation. I hadn’t ever been to Custom Design in the newest sites (created in the last couple of days) or the old sites, but the other ones I created in the last year had been created solely for testing purposes after I began contributing regularly to the forums last November. I certainly have activated the trial preview on at least some of those 15 or so test sites in the past seven months.

And I sometimes use my primary site for testing, so that would have been an exception among the older sites.

@rachelmcr- ablogdemo is now consistently showing the Customizer as it appears in my last screenshot and has not reverted.
Looking through my sites (not enough time for all of them), it’s a mixed bag. So far it seems the majority of my older sites show the Customizer in Custom Design preview, as in this earlier screenshot of my test site https://cldup.com/CyCX3wU7NF.png The exception is disoriyenta which shows the Customizer like on ablogdemo
I arrived at the Customizer through the WP Admin Dashboard>Appearance>Background link on the majority of sites. Only on gammagirl did I need to use WPAdmin>Dashboard>Appearance>Customize because there’s no “Background” link under Appearance.
So, if I was not following this thread and did not know that I needed to do something to get to the free feature on sites where the Custom Design menu appears as default, it would still appear to me that I need to buy an upgrade to change my background.

Thank you both for all of your input. :) The team is aware of the issue with changing the background while previewing Custom Design (along with some of the other issues mentioned in this thread), and we’re now working on the best way to proceed. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain your concerns!

Hi–I’m also having trouble with this. I’m working on a site that needs to go live next week and I just purchased the domain with the understanding that I’d be able to change the background without having to pay for upgrade, but no matter what I do the background refuses to change. Does anybody have a quick fix or workaround while staff tries to sort out the larger problem? Thanks.

Hi mlrio,
Is this on the site you’re working on at http://mlrio.com/ or elsewhere?
You can change that site’s background in the site’s Customizer. In the “Colors & Backgrounds” section there you can hover over the white background color and click the “Change” button to change it.
When you’re done, you can click the “Save & Publish” button at the top of the customizer to publish your changes.
If that doesn’t work for you, please let me know!
