Custom background and links from static front page?

  I want to create a new site for a book, with static front page, and links from that to other pages. I use twenty eleven for my blog, and like it. Can I use it with custom design to create a single column with a background I already have, and then link images to further pages?

  Yes, that should be pretty basic.
