Custom CSS question

    Hi,
I hired someone proficient in CSS to customize my blog. He sent over the preview and it looked perfect, exactly the way I wanted. When we went to “port”it over, he said that since it’s a WP blog, that he didn’t realize that there are limitations on what he can customize. He said everything was possible but the horizontal menu bar with drop-downs. The menu bar is really important to me and was the primary reason I hired him to customize my blog. Shouldn’t he be able to just delete the existing code and paste in the new code, with the menu bar? Why does he think that the horiz. menu bar isn’t possible? I’m not clear on that. Can someone please take a look at the preview and let me know if this should work with WP or not. Any info. on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Oh, I also had purchased the CSS upgrade as well.
    Thanks!

If that is your blog, you don’t need to purchase the CSS upgrade, because it’s not hosted on WordPress.com. If you’re talking about http://jnicholsphoto.wordpress.com/ your consultant is correct about what he can’t change.

The CSS upgrade doesn’t change the way themes actually WORK. It only changes superficial things like column width, colours, etc. You might show him the Sandbox theme, which offers more freedom, or others, but it could mean doubling his time and thus your bill.

What you want is, of course, perfectly possible on an independently-hosted WordPress blog, but not one here.

    Thanks raincoaster!
What do you think my options are at this point? Can I just get my own host and then plug in the new CSS? Would he be able to use the CSS he created for my current theme? Where do I go from here to achieve the blog in the preview? It is created from the Benevolence theme.

It’s a lovely design, and it’d be too bad if you couldn’t use it. If you did get an independent host, you should be able to just plug it in and go. With the CSS upgrade, he would be limited and it sounds like he’s given you a good idea of those limitations. I’m afraid I haven’t got enough CSS experience to help further. Maybe Isadora or Devblog or someone will peek in and be able to give you a more informed perspective.

Thanks raincoaster! I’ll try going with an independent host and see what happens.
