custom css question, link and hover colors, coraline theme

  • Unknown's avatar

hello! i am trying to make an adjustment on my blog…but am not having much luck. i use the coraline theme with the custom css upgrade. if you click on an entry in the blog, above the entry there will be links to the previous post and the next post (if applicable). these links show up in blue, and are red when hovered over. i want to change the color of these links as well as the hover color, but i cannot find the correct css lines to do so! it’s driving me nuts, because i think i’ve changed every other link and hover color on the blog, lol! :) could anyone familiar with the coraline theme tell me which lines i need to alter to make these changes, or can someone tell me which selectors i should be looking for to make these changes? thanks so much for any and all help! :)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Before we tell you this, you need to correct things in the CSS editor. You’ve made the mistake of copypasting the entire stylesheet of the theme: this creates a lot of unnecessary redundancies as well as conflicts. You should delete everything and enter only the specific changes you make. See here as well:

Also note that CSS questions should be posted in the CSS forum.

i haven’t ever copypasted anything in the css editor, let alone the entire stylesheet of the theme! i would be too afraid that i would mess the whole thing up–i’m a css newbie, obviously! :) all i have ever done is make small tweaks to the the blog (such as font colors and sizes) in what was already placed in the css editor when i purchased the custom css upgrade. but in any case, i will post this in the css forum. perhaps someone will have an answer to my question. thank you!

You’re welcome, but before replying I examined your CSS using Firebug: your CSS editor does contain a duplicate of the entire stylesheet of the theme. When you purchased the upgrade the CSS editor should have no CSS in it. As I already said, the right thing to do would be to retain only those “small tweaks” and delete all the rest.

(And I do have the answer to your question, but first I wanted to protect you from future trouble. You can disregard my advice, but please refer to this thread when you’ll post in the CSS forum so we can see what staff will say about it.)

Oh, I just saw you have already posted in the CSS forum. So I’ll link to this thread myself.

when i purchased the css upgrade, it contained everything that is currently in the css editor (except for the small color changes, font sizes, etc.). as i already said, i am not css-savvy enough to get the idea to copy and paste the entire theme stylesheet in the editor. i have had my blog this way for well over a year, and i haven’t had any problems. i don’t feel comfortable “deleting the rest” because everything has worked fine thus far, and i don’t know every little thing i’ve changed over that time (which makes “retaining only those ‘small tweaks’ and deleting the rest” problematic), and i fear that by deleting things, i will cause issues.

thanks for your advice, but if you have the answer to my question, could you please share it?

When you go to Appearance > Custom Design > CSS, the Publish module says “Mode: Add-on”, right? This means that browsers read the whole original stylesheet of the theme then the content of the CSS editor. So in your case it means that a) they read everything twice, most of it unnecessarily, b) you may have issues and conflicts.

“I don’t know every little thing i’ve changed over that time”. That’s the other reason why the recommended way is to add only the changes you make.

What you could do to find all the little things is copypaste the original stylesheet into a text file and compare it with the modified version you’ve got in the CSS editor, or check the revisions in the Revisions module. Then you could safely keep the changes and delete the rest.

If you insist on keeping things the way you have them now, then at least click Edit next to “Mode: Add-on” and switch to the “Replace” mode, to avoid the duplication.

But note that replies in the CSS forum are generally given under the assumption that you’re using the CSS editor as recommended (that is, replies usually say what lines to add, not what lines to alter).

For the actual answer to your original question see the other thread.

thank you very much, both for this and for answering the question in the other thread! this is very helpful, and makes using custom css seem a lot less intimidating than it is to me right now! :) i’m not sure how the entire stylesheet got in the css editor, but the next time i am in the same room as someone who really understands this stuff (to keep me me from making a major error!), i will be sure to fix it in the way you have advised.

not to open another can of worms, but just out of curiosity, would my usage of typekit for the blog have anything to do with the theme stylesheet ending up in the css editor? and is there anything i need to know when i eventually make these revisions to ensure my typekit isn’t messed with?

    You’re welcome.
“Would my usage of typekit for the blog have anything to do with the theme stylesheet ending up in the css editor?”
    By itself, no.
“And is there anything i need to know when i eventually make these revisions to ensure my typekit isn’t messed with?”
I’m not quite familiar with Typekit, so this can of worms should best be answered by staff.
