Is the “custom design” feature no longer available for purchase on its own outside the Premium and Business plans? If not, why do I still see messages at different dashboard sites telling me that I can purchase custom design on its own for only $30? This seems intentionally misleading and very unprofessional.

Individual upgrades are still available, but only for the users registered prior to 1 September 2014.
New users registered after the above date can only buy the bundled plans.

Any account opened after Sept 1, 2014 is subject to the new Cable TV Pricing Up-Sell Bundle – no longer available to you for $30- – but a new special price of only $99.-/yr
Many of us argued against the Up-Sell pricing of forcing you to buy junk like space upgrades & video press that you probably don’t want or need

*Sigh.* I hate to tell ya, WordPress Folk, but the amount of customization available WITHOUT upgrading to plans is actually less than the amount of free customization you can get at other places like Blogger (significantly less, I might add). Seems like that was a pretty silly policy change that will push new users in the direction of other sites.
I probably won’t be blogging here after all :(

Sorry not better news – the only workaround is to transfer the blog to an older account and have the older account buy the upgrade for you – but the older account needs to be a very good friend so you get your blog back in the future some time
